teehas53 Posted June 7, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) To John Milich and Guy Mancuso especially - Mind sharing a bit more detail how you got the glass out of filters for re-use in the Milich WATE adaptor? John, I know you suggested a certain rubber filter tool, but mentioned nothing about the operation itself, cautions, etc. I also read somewhere that Guy had done it with a rubber sink stopper! More detail would be much appreciated. I finally located a 49mm Leica UV/IR (as rare as hen's teeth apparently) and don't want to damage it when replacements are so hard to come by (not to mention the $99.00 price tag.) I've had my adaptor for about a month now, and am anxious to put it to use... T
Advertisement Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Hi teehas53, Take a look here Removing filter glass for use in Milich WATE adaptor. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest guy_mancuso Posted June 7, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 7, 2007 Tom first the filter has a spring loaded retaining ring. I just used a jewelers tool to carefull knock it out and just grab it out . remember what the front was. Now place in adapter than use a retaining ring that is screw threaded. Than i used a eraser head to finsh it. John may have a better plan. The bath stop was to remove a filter with a threaded retaing ring. The Leica filetr does not have that
jlm Posted June 7, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 7, 2007 I use a sharp pick to ease the spring end out of the groove, then grab it with a needlenose plier and it will pop out. the threaded retaining ring will screw into the WATE adapter using the rubber stopper tool as a wrench. teehas53 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted June 7, 2007 Thanks guys - This makes much more sense now. John, my adaptor did not include a threaded retaining ring (which I apparently need when using the Leica filter.) I'll contact you off-forum. Thanks! carstenw Posted June 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2007 My WATE adapter didn't come with the threaded ring either, but I thought that there was one in the Leica filter which we were meant to use?
jlm Posted June 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 7, 2007 the first group of adapters @ $140 that were sent out were intended to use the end user's B+W filter and also its threaded retaining ring. Then Guy discovered that the Leica 49mm filter glass was better. So I then started machining retaining rings and including them with new orders for $150. I f you need a retaining ring, those are available now separately for $10. jm
marknorton Posted June 7, 2007 Share #7 Posted June 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) There's a ring with the B+W filter but not the Leica filter, so if you are using the Leica filter, you can get a ring from John.
teehas53 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted June 7, 2007 OK, mystery solved. Thanks! T
Guest guy_mancuso Posted June 7, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 7, 2007 Tom if you have a old B+W 49mm you can steal that retaining ring, which is what orginally did.
teehas53 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted June 7, 2007 Good thought, Guy - I honestly don't know if I have one or not. Time to go dig through the "deadman" box... T
carstenw Posted June 7, 2007 Share #11 Posted June 7, 2007 Ah, my mistake, I do appear to have a ring after all. I hadn't noticed it because it didn't make any loose noises and it looked like a rubber/cork ring against which the glass would be pushed.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted June 7, 2007 Share #12 Posted June 7, 2007 It maybe screwed into the adapter already
fjmcsu Posted June 7, 2007 Share #13 Posted June 7, 2007 Just this week did the Leica to Milich adapter transplant(removed ring with small screwdriver) & used the lens rim rubber do-hickey from the web-site John recommended. This little device made it well worth the 25.00$ I paid for it.Now I need to wait for my WATE(ordered)
carstenw Posted June 7, 2007 Share #14 Posted June 7, 2007 What is the lens rim rubber do-hickey? Do I need this if I buy a Leica 49mm filter and have the WATE adapter with the threaded ring? By the way, do I have to do anything with the tiny hex screw when I assemble all this?
ejcaliguri@comcast.net Posted June 7, 2007 Share #15 Posted June 7, 2007 To add - is the 'gum rubber' ring removal tool better than the black hard rubber tool? Seems the softer 'gum' one would be better .... just a guess:)
fjmcsu Posted June 7, 2007 Share #16 Posted June 7, 2007 I don't know about the gummmed version but the rubber version has multiple diameters that might be useful for other filter sizes should that be needed in the future. Carsten: it's called a lens rim tool kit(I couldn't remember the name till I found the web-site). It really helped me get the Leica retaining ring snug on the 486 lens which I could not do in any othr way(the ring is quite difficult to place deep into the filter ring adapter evenly & flat). Others tried a rubber bath drain stop with some success but I found this to be very useful, although I'm not sure I will use it again. I might add the kit came complete with a thank you card & wrapped candy- a nice gesture from what appears is a responsive & niche company.
