MEB Posted May 30, 2016 Share #1  Posted May 30, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am quite happy with the default programming on the 4 rear buttons but I am having problems deciding what to do with the front button. I don't really need a button devoted to gray card. I don't use that often enough to devote a button to it. I have the SL 24-90 lens on the camera 80 percent of the time and M lenses the rest (I'm looking to add a couple of R lenses too). I also use flash a bit. I have both the SF58 and the SF40.  So, my question is what suggestions are there from other SL users as to what to program into the front button?  Thanks, Mark

Albert Andersen Posted May 30, 2016 Share #2  Posted May 30, 2016 I have the 4 rear buttons set up like this: TL: ISO BL: Metering  (Multi - Center - Spot) TR: Focus mode  (AFs - AFc) BR: AF field size The front FN button have I set to Drive mode. It makes it easy to change from "Single shot to Continus" mode. Video button: User profies  It works for me, so maybe also for you.
ramarren Posted May 30, 2016 Share #3  Posted May 30, 2016 For use with the SL24-90, I have my camera configured this way:  TL: drive mode BL: metering mode TR: EV Compensation BR: ISO FN: image stabilization control LV: exposure bracketing video record: User profiles  Because the AF system has three menus to configure it, I put them in the Favorites menu for use with the dedicated lenses.
Peter Walker Posted May 30, 2016 Share #4 Â Posted May 30, 2016 I also use the front Function Button (Fn) for the Drive mode. That way I can quickly move from Single to Continuous or, if the light is a bit weird, to Bracket. Or, if I want to use the 2 second Timer to either dampen all possible shake when using a tripod or to include myself in a family photo with the longer timer, those options are both there too. Â And the reason that is logical for me is that my first camera, the Olympus OM1, had its manual self-timer winder in exactly that position on the body. LocalHero1953 Posted May 30, 2016 Share #5  Posted May 30, 2016 The functions I want to change most often in mid-flow are all to do with focus and SL lenses. So my three most easily accessed buttons (while using a handstrap) are: - Front: AFs-AFc-MF - LV: normal-tracking-face recognition -TR: spot-zone-field  The other function I use a lot is ISO, which is my TL button. The rest are less critical: BL=drive mode, BR=flash EC, video=OIS. With a handstrap, I can't reach the latter, but I only want it for tripod use. Ario Arioldi Posted May 31, 2016 Share #6 Â Posted May 31, 2016 Front button selects AF mode when I am using the Vario Elmarit 24-90 and selects lens profiles when I am using R or M lenses.
jonoslack Posted May 31, 2016 Share #7  Posted May 31, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have mine set to metering mode . . . spot metering (which I hardly ever used on other cameras) works so very well with the SL - as it moves around with the AF point with SL lenses . . and is moved via the joystick for M lenses.
appleman Posted November 1, 2016 Share #8 Â Posted November 1, 2016 Have had a SL with 90/280mm lens for a couple of weeks now. How do I change the buttons to suit as you all have described above?.
ramarren Posted November 1, 2016 Share #9  Posted November 1, 2016 Page 182 in the manual: 'DIRECT ACCESS TO MENU ITEMS' Enter the menu system Go to the Setup section Choose the Customize Control menu item Select Short Cuts in the submenu There you will see a list of all the buttons that can be customized with a direct access menu item. For each customizable button, select the menu item command you want to be assigned to it.  Note: Assigned functions are available as a long press on the intended button. Standard (non-editable) functions are a short press on the intended button.
