Ivar B Posted May 10, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see that this has been discussed in other threads, but I start a new one as my case is perhaps a little different from the ones discussed so far. The 90-280 is very large and very expensive, and I wondered if the T 55-135 could also serve me well. It appears to be very compact, and with the crop factor I believe it is identical to a 200mm at the long end which should be sufficient. I noted that Jono Slack in his excellent SL review stated that the T lenses performed very well on the SL even if the the sensor is in effect reduced to 10.3 MP. thighslapper Posted May 10, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 10, 2016 I did wonder if a post processing cropped 90mm image from the 24-90 would be close to the reduced 200mm image produced with the 55-135 ..... but as you can see you get about 50% more in image size than with the SL zoom. Both of these were at f10 and on a tripod. The 55-135 is a very good performer ....... if you can live with the fact you are using a 24mp camera to produce 10mp images it is certainly a much lighter and cheaper alternative. LocalHero1953 Posted May 10, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just don't get the idea that by picking a T lens for an SL you effectively get a lens of longer focal length. You still have a 55-135 zoom, and you are simply enlarging the central part of the sensor, at the cost of reduced resolution. You can only use the "crop factor" argument in this context if you also accept that you can treat the 90-280 zoom as a 180-560 zoom simply by enlarging the central pat of the image. Don't let terminology about "crop factors" obscure the optics/physics underlying it. But as long as you understand all this, then the 55-135 will work fine. I use the 55-135 for my grandsons' Little League baseball games and it is very good for that. Of course all I am looking for there is snaps for small prints and distributing by email.
