Jeff S Posted August 26, 2016 Share #21 Posted August 26, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm not surprised Neil is pissed off. 3 out of 3 lens failures must be something close to a record for any manufacturer. I like Leica, but quality of lenses is not just about the optics. And it's not as if he's unique.....how about 2 out of 3 cameras, and 4 out of 6 lenses?... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/249551-33-failure-rate-with-leica-s-system/?p=2994119 Despite this, Marc continues with the system because of its file quality and other attributes (and because of his other system back-ups). Not all folks would be so inclined. Leica should have, at the very least, communicated better about the issue(s), and the fix(es). On the AF issue specifically, there should have been a well controlled recall (assuming there is a permanent solution, which customers should know about). Leica usually does the right thing eventually....but typically not without a heavy push from owners (see forum threads regarding early M8 issues, M9 sensor corrosion, etc). The M240 strap lug problem and fix was a notable exception....proactive and swift. Jeff

John McMaster Posted August 26, 2016 Share #22 Posted August 26, 2016 I have had three cameras (M9, original Monochrom and S2-P) all off for sensor replacement and two S lenses with AF failure but between results, usability and enjoyment of use I am not looking elsewhere. john

I also find it understandable that the AF mechanism has a flaw. I can also understand that Leica is not in a position to be able to fix all S lenses in a Toyota-type recall. The part that I find less impressive (and I don't have any S lenses), is their choice to not communicate openly and lay out a plan that enhances customer loyalty. We all know that AF is not critical to using the lenses, but it is an important feature that has been paid for. Taking Neil's situation, there is (I believe) a significant psychological difference between [a] having been told about the cause and fix of the problem, along with a future estimated timeframe for return and repair, and taking a preceding trip knowing a failure may occur, and being told nothing, and taking every trip knowing that a failure may occur, and the only way to figure out how long a subsequent return and repair may take is to question other customers on an online forum. I really enjoy my Leica equipment, and the above is not sufficient to turn me away from it, but I do have trouble understanding why they take this "ostrichian" approach. It seems much closer to what i would expect from a small artisan than from a commercial business. That's all - I just don't understand.

The part failure has rendered many lenses inoperable even in manual mode, according to various posts. Jeff
jip Posted August 28, 2016 Share #25 Posted August 28, 2016 Leica replaces the broken parts in the AF lenses with the same part, it's not a fix. It's like the Leica Sensor corrosion at first if it happened they replaced your sensor with the same one but without the corrosion until inevitably it would corrode again, now Leica has a fixed sensor so they can actually fix it once and for al once customers send their camera in with the defect. Leica S lenses are repaired with the same flawed AF motor cogwheel as the one that broke.

Because of my problems, I have had several direct conversations with Wetzlar. Your statement is a contradiction to what Leica told me. I am encouraged by what Leica is doing, but the proof will be in the results. I also am planning a personal visit. If anyone is interested, I will report back.
