Inadvertent JPEG selection on Leica Q

I work with User Presets on all of my Leica digital cameras. Sometimes I make changes to some settings while out and about, then revert to my chosen preset. But strange things are happening on my Q despite all presets being based on the DNG file format. For no obvious reason I discover that a sequence of shots have all been taken as JPEGs, despite my never using or knowingly selecting that format.

I have checked the manual and rehearsed my operating procedures, yet I still get caught out occasionally. Has any other member experienced this behaviour or can anyone offer a clue as to why it should happen? (It has never occurred on my X1, X Vario, M8 or MP)

you are not alone  i just came back from a morning of shooting and all i can is the jpgs---....lightroom is not seeing the dng"s... file explorer is.  i think it is an apple problem... not recognizing the dngs

I think you have a separate problem. In my case the file format is clearly shown in the preview on the back screen. It suddenly changes from DNG/Jpeg to simply Jpeg. The computer is irrelevant.

Is it for some reason reverting to the default preset, David?  When you go into the User Profile, is one of your user profiles still ticked?

Yes it is Keith. Thank you. But I am not sure it is erroneous profile selection or the result of making other changes inadvertently, such as pressing the video button instead of the shutter release. I am not alone in experiencing that behaviour. I use the info/set button a lot and that cycles through vastly different parameters including video shooting. I am assuming it is 'operator error' until I discover otherwise.

I do prefer the X Vario and M button allocation on left side of monitor. I do not understand why Leica designers cannot stick to some semblance of uniformity. But I do find the Q an impressive camera in use. Just a bit confusing with it sharing my bag with the X Vario. They make good companions, otherwise.

I lost  few days of shooting this way, because the jpegs were of the lowest resolution,  and useless for printing.  I reset and have had no problems, but it has taught to check the settings.

Geoffrey, although I am sorry for you, I am slightly relieved that my experience is not unique. It has not happened with any of my other LEICA digital cameras. But I think I might have found a reason for it.

I have measured the diameter of the Direction Pads. The X Vario is 21mm, about the same as the width of my thumb-tip, whereas the Q is only 15mm. When I check or change my User Presets there is a distinct movement of thumb-tip to make the selection. Not so with the Leica Q. During my analysis I discovered that I could inadvently press the top or 12 o'clock position instead of confirming my choice with the centre button, thus moving my chosen preset from User 1 to Default which is jpegs. For users wishing to record DNG or Raw files, this is a disastrous  error.

The cure is yet more caution at the start of every serious shooting experience. Don't shoot until you have checked you chosen parameters.

There are lessons to be learned in future designs and I do hope Leica is reading this thread.
