Guest Posted April 14, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having updated to FW 2.0, I am still only seeing 169 AF points in 1 Point AF. Does anyone know how do I get the claimed 529 AF points? Thanks

Guest Posted April 15, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2016 If I am in 1 point AF, I can move my AF point 13 points horizontally and 13 points vertically giving me a total of 13x13=169 points to select from.

profus Posted April 15, 2016 Share #5 Posted April 15, 2016 Found it myself in "Instruction firmware" document: "Improved Autofocus : Higher precision Improved tracking New AF-steps in setup-menu (1 and 5 steps) Improved 1Point AF: 529 AF-Points" Anyone can confirm this? cpclee Posted April 15, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2016 In the documentation that you can download alongside the update. It mentions 529 AF points in 1point AF mode but I don't see more Af points in actual use.

Guest Posted April 15, 2016 Share #8 Posted April 15, 2016 Thanks for the confirming that at least I am not imagining things. I will can Leica UK to find out whether this was a misprint or if not whether it is a planned release. But this "new" feature has been mentioned in several respected publications already. thighslapper Posted April 15, 2016 Share #9 Posted April 15, 2016 529 is 23 squared ......presumably it refers to the block of pixels used for 1 point AF ...... which bearing in mind the overlying bayer matrix probably uses one pixel per bayer block and therefore covers an area of 92x92 pixels....... (which looks about the size of the cross on the EVF) ...... or multiples thereof. It implies that one point AF was previously innaccurate as it was sampling too small a number of points in the previous one point AF block ..... Mr Cat will probably know or can make sense of this statement .....
thighslapper Posted April 15, 2016 Share #10 Posted April 15, 2016 having perused the manual I am none the wiser as to the whether they mean points or steps .... so I am not sure if I have got the wrong end of the stick or not ...... or Leica are ...... there are clearly not 23x23 steps available in one point AF
Suteetat Posted April 15, 2016 Share #11 Posted April 15, 2016 May be it is like Nikon D5, D500 that has so many AF point but not all is user selectable. All the extra focus point are there to aid the camera to AF more accurately. At least in Nikon case, people did say that to have all those AF selectable, it would be a pain if you are trying to move AF point from one place to another and what Nikon gave, cover enough of the. So we have 13x13 grids instead of 23x23 grids

thighslapper Posted April 16, 2016 Share #13 Posted April 16, 2016 ...... but that doesn't make any sense with 1 point AF .....because it effectively becomes 4 point AF as you have almost doubled the number of points in each direction ......
Steve Spencer Posted April 16, 2016 Share #14 Posted April 16, 2016 ...... but that doesn't make any sense with 1 point AF .....because it effectively becomes 4 point AF as you have almost doubled the number of points in each direction ...... You could set it up so that you can only select 169 of the 529 points but all of them work for tracking. Canon calls the non-selectable AF points helper points I believe. Basically any AF system can use more points in the calculation of focus than it allows to be selected. All but the most rudimentary systems used by Canon and Nikon work this way. Thanks 169 AF points vs. 529 points with fw 2.0? Leica itself mention those 529 points, but up from 49?? "Leica released firmware update 2.0 for their SL mirrorless camera system. Some of the improvements are improved AF, 1/16,000 shutter speed, 529 AF points (up from 49) " Anyone can explain what's up and down here? Tnx
ramarren Posted May 9, 2016 Share #16 Posted May 9, 2016 Honestly, I have no idea what it means nor does the specific meaning of the words matter to me. What I note with fw 2.0 is that the AF system's Auto [Face] setting and Tracking work more effectively. How they achieve that ... I don't know, but perhaps that's where a greater number of AF points to work with has an effect.
