wparsonsgisnet Posted June 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had an interesting problem this weekend. I was loading cards onto the pc's disk. One card was not 'seen' by windoze and when accessed as a disk showed files but says they are all corrupt when I try to copy them. I can see these images on the M8's screen, so I tethered the M8 to the computer and read the files that way. The have loaded properly to the pc. I always shoot dng + hi-res jpg. The files seem to be in similar pairs -- and are all 10gb tiff's. I can see them all in ACDSee (it does think they are all tiff's). Since they are all 10GB, they must be dng's, says I. I copied one and changed the filetype to dng. C1 sees it as a dng. I'm still playing to see what is going on. I shot 3 cards worth at this dance rehearsal and concert. The other 2 are exactly as expected, containing dng and jpg pairs. Weird. Watch this space, unless another of you monsters has the solution for this odd occurrence. larry Posted June 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2007 Bill, I've had a similar thing happen to DNG files on my PC here at work -- it won't see the files. But when I take the card to our art department, their Macs never have a problem seeing the files (nor my Mac at home). I haven't been able to nail down the cause, but I do see a trend. The problem occurs whenever there are more than about 20 shots on the card. When I figure this out, I'll let you know. Larry
wparsonsgisnet Posted June 4, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted June 4, 2007 Thanks, Larry. I'll plug my reader into my Powerbook G4 and see if it sees them. I'l r-e-a-l-l-y glad to hear it depends on the number of files (insert unacceptable declarative words, here). I'll mark this card to see if it continues to misbehave. Jamie Roberts Posted June 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 4, 2007 Hmm. It would be a trend except that I have like 20 2GB SD cards and 20 CF cards I read on my PC all the time without any trouble. In 4 years of use, I've only had one card failure (and that was a CF card). Bill--do you format your cards in-between use? On the camera, that is? You're not just erasing images, right? Jamie, I reformat every single time I use the cards. In thinking about the problem, the only thing I can think of is that it may have been formatted before upgrading to 1.1.02. I haven't done anything with this particular card yet because I want to play with it, but I immediately reformatted all my other cards again. All these cards are Ridata 150x 2GB cards and none has given me any problems before.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted June 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 4, 2007 Bill when all is saved and safe . Take that card and format on the PC than reformat it again on the M8, sometimes bytes just hang on for dear life. It's possible the card went bad on you too. wparsonsgisnet Posted June 4, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted June 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, Guy. I'll try that trick ... but basically, I expect to throw it away. What I really don't understand is why the M8 tethered made the files appear as tiff's. I have never saved a tiff in any camera, tiff is not an option in the M8 Set menu, and the files are of course 10GB. In fact, they are all 10GB, even the ones I expected to be jpg's. I'm still studying this new lab animal. If she were a female, I'd refer to her as a pigion ... [Note: this is not a chauvanistic joke, but a play on words about laboratory test animals.]
