Analog photography in Berlin

This is my first new topic posting since signing up. Hello to everyone.

I am visiting Berlin for the first time next week but have an entire day to myself. I'm the sort who heads straight for the used camera shops whenever I'm in Tokyo.

Am trying to make a list of camera shops and other places to visit in Berlin apart from Fotoimpex and the Leica store, which are already on my list. I couldn't find a guide online or a recent thread on this so I hope you don't mind my seeking your suggestions.

What are your favorite used camera and analog photography stores in Berlin?

From the look of this site: http://www.photography-in.berlin/  there is an incredibly rich photography scene here. Apart from gear-hounding and taking pictures I'll sneak out to visit a couple of these events/exhibitions. There are so many it's hard to know where to begin. I'd be most grateful for any suggestions you might have for what someone of our photographic interests could do in Berlin.

I shoot both analog and digital, with a preference for black and white film, and am tempted to make this an analog-only trip, but then I think of the airport X ray scans on all the legs of the journey and all that film. No chance in this security environment that they'll do hand inspections as Asian airport staff are usually happy to do.

Thank you

Enjoy your trip. I'm on an film only trip too, and asked for hand inspection of my 40 odd rolls of film at Heathrow and Istanbul. Staff were happy to oblige, and I had my JCH egg boxes ready. Look forward to the results.

Wow I've only experienced gruff or even rude staff at Heathrow (where I am transiting) so I'll try it again. I too use those JCH boxes or zip lock bags to make hand inspection as convenient as possible. I also think I'm going to be buying a load of film at Fotoimpex.

I was super nice and it was ok... Maybe I got lucky. My emulsion of choice is usually cheaper in DE? Agfa Vista, but pro Kodak and Ilford will no doubt be around the same price if not a little higher. Ilford in India is super expensive!

I'll be going for all those emulsions I can't get in Singapore. Surfing the Fotoimpex site I see a bunch I have never even heard of such as Bergger, Spur, Foma, Kono and Revolog.

Nice Place us Galerie Breede next to the Leica Store at Fasanenstraße. Fine BW-Fotos. Visit CO Berlin and the Helmut Newton Collection near. Another good shop: Fotopioniere at Karl-Marx-Allee.

And that's the other suggestion, buy your film in Europe, and get it processed there even. I thought of that on the first trip, but in the end just bought it all home and processed it myself.

At least by buying once you're there you reduce/halve the exposure to damage.

Enjoy Berlin, I just got back the other day from a week there. The CO Berlin has a good Stephen Shore Exhibition on at the moment and I would highly recommend that. There is a good exhibition on at the Museum for Fotografie over the road, on the upper floor as well. Ive seen the Helmut Newton work a couple of times now taking students there so I'm more interested on what they have upstairs.

There is an interesting little camera shop stuffed with analogue in Charlottenburg on the Kanstrasse near Amstgerichtsplatz had an M5 in the window when I looked last week.

If you get the chance head out to Potsdam too.

Hello,

I've got hand inspection at Berlin airports some times (not always). They told me, there scanners are film save up to 1000 ASA. So I always have a 3200 ASA film with me and informed them about it. Sometimes this helped.

On the other hand I guess two Superia 800 got ruined by x-raying there, that was scanned along with my Leica stuff in the same bag. The pictures looked underexposed and rather grainy. But I had other 800 ASA film got scanned there several times without an issue. So better keep the film in a seperate bag if the like to scan it.

Be aware that Fotoimpex will open first at noon, apart from most other stores there.

Have a nice trip.

Fantastic.. And oh I was just deliberating between taking an M5 and an M6 as a main camera.

These are just the sort of places I hope to visit.

Edit: P/S Have taken a look online  at C/O Berlin's current exhibitions and they look good. Thanks for the heads up.

Update: Film and person made it safely to Berlin. Hand inspected three times, including once at Heathrow (The film. Not me). I was as super nice as ShivaYas and packed Delta 3200 like fotomas. And Portra 800, and "roll your own " Tri-X that I promised I'd be pushing to 1600 :)

You should definitely try Foma films, especially Foma 100. A beautiful film with great tones, love it either in Rodinal or D-76.

Great timing. Am at Fotoimpex right now and just bought a stack of Foma. Thank you
