M8 or Digilux 3 ?

I have many years experience as a keen amateur, currently using; Nikon film and digital SLR (lots of glass), Mamiya 7 medium format rangefinder, Leica D-Lux2 point&shoot.

I now need to put on reading glasses to see the screen of the D-Lux, and frankly hate not having a viewfinder.

My quest is for a smallish digital camera to carry when on cycling tours, where the SLR kit is too large and heavy. I would be stretching myself to afford an M8 and lens, but could just manage if the Digilux3 is likely to frustrate.

Any advice welcome.

I have both. I bought the Digilux3 last November, when it was uncertain I could get an M8 for an arctic trip in January. In the end I got one and I must admit I hardly ever use the Digilux since. Maybe on birthday parties but less and less.

The M8 with one small lens 35 or 28 mm will fit your needs perfectly

I have been using the digilux 2 for 1½ years and was so satisfied with it. If have just recently switched to M8 and am just as satisfied. My biggest concern was the lacking autofocus however it's really no problem now.

Shooting with an M8 gives me a sense of real photography. In my opinion I would go for the M8. The D3 seems very clumsy, big, noisy etc...

Not by any means knocking the M8 - but take a quick look at the thread about other lenses on the D3/L1. Size isn't everything! You have a lot of Nikon lenses which perhaps could be used with an adapter. Just a thought!.

Malcolm,

After damaging my D3 and waiting for its return (it has a passport gurantee for 6/12, free repairs:D ) i brought an M8. Have hardly used the D3 since, will probably sell it .

The M8 is compact in comparison including lenses and straight forward to use.Voightlander have good reviews off there lenses, which are considerably less pricey than leica ,as an altrnative.I have a WATE 16,18,21 + a 35 mm sumicron and am enjoying the total experience.

The M8 had dust spots on the sensor initialy but has cleaned up it's act after some use.

The panasonic L1 is virtually the same beast as the D3 and far cheaper ?

Recalling my cycling days i'd go the M8 route.

cheers rf.
