honcho Posted March 23, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 23, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I picked up a brochure from the Leica stand at TPS. I was surprised that the MP does not feature in it and as far as I could tell there were no MP's on display. The M-A is in the brochure and there were a couple of M-A's on the display counter. I assume the omission is down to the brochure being 32 pages including the covers, unless I've missed something about the future of the MP!
Advertisement Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Hi honcho, Take a look here Leica MP. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted March 23, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2016 For years now, the MP has been a "build to order" model. That might be the reason.
wattsy Posted March 23, 2016 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2016 Yes, there do seem to be some question marks hanging over the status of the MP. It is still listed and shown on the main Leica website and it, of course, is still one of the options in the a la carte programme but it doesn't appear as a current product on many dealer websites (including the Mayfair shop's own website) and is back ordered on a number of websites that do still feature it. I'd be very surprised if they dropped it – I have been told that it is a steady seller and I'm sure it must sell more than the M7 or M-A – but Leica often do surprising things so who knows? How about the M7 – was that in the catalogue and/or on the stand? It is of course possible that the size of the brochure was a factor and I know that previous editions of the system brochure have omitted the film cameras entirely but I do get the impression that Leica's commitment to the film cameras isn't as wholehearted as many of us still using them might like. That said, I was told that the former head of Leica UK was recently appointed as a kind of ambassador/champion for the film camera 'division' (not sure what they really means) and the existence of the M-A (which I know for a fact that they were still making as recently as October last year) indicates that the company hasn't entirely forsaken film in it's quest to sell as many different kinds of digital camera as it can think up. LeicaFFM Posted March 23, 2016 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2016 The MP is still available. As Andy mentioned before, it is just a "made to order" model.

I've never seen or handled the M-A before. The chrome version is very, very nice although it doesn't seem to have the same heft of my MP. I've always taken comments about the simplicity of it compared to other film M's with a pinch of salt, but I get the point now. Simply taking the battery out of an MP or ignoring the led's does not give you an M-A. Nice little camera, were I faced with the choice of a new MP or M-A, I'm not sure which way I'd jump. Fortunately, I don't need to make that decision!

No M7 in the little brochure, I didn't see any on the stand either.
