Infrandom Posted March 16, 2016 Share #1  Posted March 16, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello,  I'm trying to figure out what the best approach is for filters to use with my Leica Summicron 50 and Summilux 35. So I have two different sizes 39mm and 46mm and was thinking of investing in a set of filters with a holder. Lee has the seven5 system which is a big pricey. Just wondering what other solutions others are happy with. I like the idea of the screw on filters but I'd have to buy two sets for the different sizes which seems like I'd start carrying a lot more around with me.  Thanks in advance for any advice. Guest )-( Posted March 16, 2016 Share #2 Â Posted March 16, 2016 For involved tripod/landscape use, Lee75 or Cokin etc. is the best solution with varying options on cheaper clone-adapters, alternative glass manufacturers etc. But I'm guessing you mean a screw-on ND filter for handheld use? For enabling wider apertures in brighter conditions or slower shutter speeds? With maybe just the occasional tripod use and not with Graduated filters? Â You can use a 39>46mm step-up ring. It means forgoing the screw on Summilux hood, though you could add an aftermarket 46mm screw on hood to the front of the filter. 46mm is a fairly standard Leica filter size, B+W and Heliopan are probably the two most popular manufacturers. Â 39mm is also a fairly standard size too of course, do you see other lenses/filter sizes in your future? 46mm is probably a reasonable size to start with, it would be my choice. Differing filter sizes are a pain, I've baulked at adding 60mm ND and B+W filters for the 75mm Summilux as I already have a great set of 46mm and 49mm ones. I still have some 55mm and 39mm ones too, I just keep them all now in the event I might need them at some point.
