The Durham Miners Gala is held in Durham once the heart of the Durham Coal Field - many pits in this area extended out under the sea. The gala takes place in July of every year and the old colliery bands followed by the pits banner process down Old Elvet from the top of the town and play for the dignitaries on the balcony of the County Hotel at the foot of the hill. At one time it would have been unthinkable for a Labour leader and most of the cabinet not to attend the gala it was the most important gathering in the working class calendar. These pictures were taken on a pair of Leica M6 cameras with 90mm and 35mm Summicron lenses - film was Kodak TRI-X developed in D76 1 fabulous work.
