TMLH Posted February 29, 2016 Share #1 Posted February 29, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am trying a find a compact flash with HSS compatibility for my Leica S2 as I need to shoot at 1/250s or higher for fill in hand held travel and portrait photography. The Leica SF 40 seem to be a perfect fit. However I could not find any instruction on HSS instruction manual. Since Leica SF 40 is similar to Nissin i40, I am wondering whether is the HSS setting instruction applicable to the Leica SF 40. Can any Leica S user share the experience with the SF 40. Thank you
Advertisement Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Hi TMLH, Take a look here Travel Flash for Leica S2 . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jip Posted March 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2016 HSS works with my SF 58 up to 1/4000 Normal flash to 1/125 or 1/1000 with my CS lenses.
John McMaster Posted March 1, 2016 Share #3 Posted March 1, 2016 Yes we know that, but with a smaller flash? john
jip Posted March 2, 2016 Share #4 Posted March 2, 2016 Ah I see, I don't know... Although this might be offtopic: 'smaller travel flash + Leica S' if you want to travel light, you shouldn't have bought the S to begin with?
peterv Posted March 3, 2016 Share #5 Posted March 3, 2016 John, the 24d is very small and I confirm the it works flawlessly with my S2-P, HSS, central shutter sync up to 1/1000, auto and manual. Of course it's not the most powerful flash around, and it can't be swivelled, but I use it al the time.
TMLH Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted March 4, 2016 Hi Peter, According to Josh L from Reddot Forum. SF24d meter perfectly in"A" mode and will on fire in TTL Mode and will not meter in "M" mode. Hence to my understanding it will not work on TTL-HSS. central shuttle lens will have flash syn up to 1/1000 with all Flashes. If my understanding is correct. peterv Posted March 4, 2016 Share #7 Posted March 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Josh is very knowledgeable concerning the S system, and I guess he's right it will not work in TTL, whatever mode, including HSS. I never use TTL, I make one and if necessary two test shots in M mode and ride the exposure compensation dial to heat it up or cool down the flash, which works like a charm. And yes, central shutter will work up to 1/1000. Hope this helps, Peter
TMLH Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted March 4, 2016 Thank Peter, after reviewing all the Leica Flashes and having conflicting answers. I went down to a Leica boutique to test the flash SF 40 with my Leica S2. It work perfectly including TTL HSS without any problem. NO special setting is required. It work on "A" "S" and "M" SYNC up to 1/4000s.
