Leica flash useful?

Recommended Posts

It is a little useful, and also pretty little itself.

At Leica's stuff is concerned on a proce per gram basis, it is not too bad.

I use it to occasionally add a bit of fill in contrasty light.

I used to have an SF20. Got rid of it when I realised I only used it once a year, if that. HOWEVER I always used it with a Nikon SC17 cord to take it off-camera - this gets around the lack of tilt/swivel.

I have SF20 which I used, I put the flash compensation -2stops (learn from a journalist who used the same flash).

or Have anyone using Sfill?

I agree with Sean. This is a neat little flash and with the Nikon cord, which I also use, able to do some nice things. But having to put $20 worth of batteries in it is just ridiculous. These batteries don't last all that long and at this price..........wow! I will use either the Metz 54 (it has its own set of problems) or the little Contax which I have left over from days gone by or the more modern Nikon SB800 in auto mode

Mike i use the Metz 54 all the time , need the 3502 module for it. Also you can use a Nikon extension cord. I also have the SF 24 and that diffuser which you can get at leicagoodies. Nice little flash but needs a update like a head that will bounce and take AA batteries but it's a nice flash in a pinch. i use it a lot for fill when doing some shots outside.

Here very very early in the morning at Yosemite, with a little flash on the logs

I know I have seen this before ..but does the M8 function with TTL ..when using the SC17 cord? Also I thought Nikon replaced the SC17 with a newer version?

When you use the SF-24D, do you set the flash to TTL?

Is SF24D send pre flash before the shoot?

Does the flash compensation works? (Metz with 3502 flash compensation in TTL mode does not work!).

thanks,

Jerry

I have been using a SF24D/NikonSC28cable and 40MZ2/3502mod5 with my D2 years ago. Now I use them both on M8. From my experience on M8, I would sum up below:

- 40MZ2/3502mod5:

D2: Both GNC and A mode give very satisfactory results, esp with its tiltable head.

GNC will do a preflash before the main flash.

On D2, I generally use A mode, quicker and great color.

Not sure whether Flash Comp can be set at 3502 adapter button.

No real TTL.

On M8, GNC does not work. A mode is great with great speed and highly satisfactory color. Set the necessary focal length & aperture values on flash unit in A mode.

- SF24D/NikonSC28cable:

On D2, can do GNC and A mode, No real TTL. No tilt head, relatively smaller flash power but a lighter unit.

On M8, it can do GNC and A mode, No real TTL. I found the color, illuminance performance and consistency of GNC is better than A mode. I shoot M8 with right hand and hold SF24D by left hand with a 45% tilted angle (as suggested by Sean as well). It is a great setup for travel and occasional flexible fill flash. Of course, GNC will do a preflash and A does not require that.

Hope my little sum up is useful for you.

This is really interesting.

Basically, I would rather not use a flash with my M8 (mostly 'cause I'd rather not have to carry one around), but there are always those situations where a touch of fill can make he shot. I have tried one of my Pentax AF-360FGZ strobes with it, and it worked quite well, but that's a pretty chunky flash unit for a svelte machine like the M8. I guess what I'd really like is a small, lightweight, yet versatile utility flash unit that I can drop in the bag and forget about until it is needed.

So, perhaps it's time for some research ... and I'll keep my eyes on this thread.

Cheers,

Kent.

With SCA 3502, My M8 can do GnC. But you need to mod 3 and above the adapter. Just send it to Metz.

I use SF-20, the problem with A set is only can be set to 2.8, 5.6 (and 11?)

Choose the Metz Flash to M, then turn the ring up until GnC appear, click the ring. Then you are set.
