Does it matter if shooting RAW?  How do folks use the User Settings feature? Do you use it at all?  M Hi There Nothing dumb about those questions. They do, however, only relate to jpg - but are still worth answering. I've done lots of fiddling about, and the conclusion I've come to is: sharpening: Low Saturation: Medium Low Contrast: Normal If you're shooting raw it doesn't matter.  I use the user settings too, FWIW Setting 1 DNG, Daylight, ISO 160, EV -1/3 Setting 2 JPG, Daylight ISO 160, EV -1/3 Setting 3 JPG, Tungsten, ISO 640, EV -1/3  and my camera spends almost all of it's time on setting 1 - but it's useful to have them. I'd like more - with the ability to give them different names.  If you've just got your M8 - congratulations! and welcome.
phovsho Posted June 2, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted June 2, 2007 Hi Jono Had it for a few weeks now. Thanks for the answers. I thought it must have been jpeg only, as i couldn't set them when on dng only. Question, why do you have e/v-1/3 on all rour settings. Do you think the meter over exposes? Venkman Posted June 2, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted June 2, 2007 The M8 DNG encoding allows for deeper darks than lights. You can easily work with the raw file to recover darks, but blown lights won't be recovered - hence the (almost standard) - 1/3 EV.
hiphop Posted June 2, 2007 Share #5  Posted June 2, 2007 I shoot raw only, so as far as the user settings are concerned :  1 ISO 160 W/B 5600 K  DNG  2 ISO 640 W/B 2500 K DNG  3 ISO 1250 W/B 5600 K DNG +JPG basic 10 MP under menu : color black and white (so I can have a preview in B/W but still have the DNG)  With these 3 options I can switch very quickly between high light, medium light and low light/black&white  Hope it helps  Pierre-Olivier

(as Jono suggested) Color Saturation: Medium Low Sharpening: Low Contrast: medium ISO 640  2. BW, Sharp: Medium, Contrast: Medium, ISO 160  3. BW, Sharp: Low, Contrast: Medium High, ISO 640  Jerry
Shootist Posted June 3, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted June 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sharpening and contrast have no effect when shooting DNG/RAW and those options are greyed out when shooting DNG only. If you shoot DNG+JPG then they are available and only have an effect on the JPG and of course if you're shooting JPG only they have an effect. Â Yes I use the User Profiles but just for general settings. ISO is always at 320 for all UP. Lens detection on and + UV/IR for all. Auto WB for all. UP 1, JPG color + Sharpening + Contrast. If I'm shooting color JPG's I'll want the imaged right away and don't have time to do any adjustments. UP 2, DNG only. UP 3, JPG only B&W normal sharpening normal contrast. Â I then make changes to the WB and ISO as needed, if needed. Â Works for me.
