Differences ...... even in quite large prints are not that marked unless you view very close up.

Sorry, SL folk, you cannot throw away your M246's ...... it still reigns supreme .... and by a fair margin, particularly with a lens like the 50/2 apo .......

But something like a 42Mpx Sony will give you high resolution, combined with an ability to map RGB onto greyscale flexibly without the need for focus shifting filters.  That latter facility is much more important to me than Billboard resolution.

Thanks for the comparison and for the amount of work.

But nobody would ever throw away a Leica - at least I do still have all of them.

(Though I have Ms since 30 years I feel as one of the SL folk and so have to say: It is not an equal fight between M and SL, nowadays it is much more a sort of survivval camp for the R-system with the single surviving trainee the SL). (Even if the SL forum gives a distorted impression).

But I do not really understand the macro photos - can you explain what you did and why you think this is so much more significant ?

And one additional thought: Even before seeing all these tests I know exactly when I will use the M246 and when I will need the SL. In my eyes and with what I want to do, I had not once a situation of "conflicting interest" between the two cameras. (To make it clear I have both and so have no general preference, but in the winter time when everything is dark and cold I use a "colour" camera more frequently than a b&w. The little colour that is still around has to be caught and emphasized).

Additionally most of the time I will not be using a perfect lens (there are 30 x times more lenses than just the one apo 50) and as you have to care about the weakest link in the full chain to the foto, I can just say that neither the M246 nor the SL will be the weakest link. (Rather the environment, the angle to the object or position or distance - too close or too far, very often the light situation, and last but not least the photographer.)

Stephan
