D-Lux 3 RAW file size

Hi Folks,

Just bought my D-Lux 3 today and loving it. I bought it as a compact to back up my Canon 20D. My main reason for choosing the Leica (over, say, a G7) was the fact that it does RAW, that it is a Leica and is soooo pretty never entered into the equation :)

Anyway I'm still playing with the camera and so I apologise in advance if this is a RTFM question, but I've done some googling and searched this forum to no avail.

My questions are:

1. When the quality is set to RAW, is it possible to disable the JPEG capture?

2. The RAW file seems to have no compression applied to it at all, RAW files from my 20D with lossless compression are around 6Mb - my D-Lux ones are around 20Mb. Is it possible to reduce the file size?

Thanks in advance,

Alan

Congrats on your DL3. And of course none of us were at all influenced by its design or that spiffy leather case.

No, you can't dump the jpeg (I think the camera uses it for the review display), nor, unfortunately, can you change it to a "fine" jpeg + raw.

And if there's a way to reduce the size of the raw file, there's nothing about that in the manual. Glad big SD cards are getting cheaper.

Hi,

Congratulations, the D3 is a nice little camera !

I agree with Sebastian about the JPEG, I had the same idea, as I don't use it, but you can't shoot raw only...

About size : Yes it is possible. When I get the raw file on my computer, I convert it in DNG straight away using Lightroom (but you can use Adobe's DNG converter or else...). It reduces the raw file by half, without losing information. I get rid of the original raw file and keep the DNG.

Kind regards

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the replies, nice to know there is an active Leica community to join :)

So you've pretty much confirmed what I already knew. The D-Lux 3 is utterly fabulous and all that I hoped for, but I need to invest in some bigger SD cards if I want to shoot RAW.

Totally loving this camera, so small, so cute, so quiet (with sound turned off) and such beautiful images. Have I said that I am in love with this camera :)

My Canon 20D may well be seeing much less action these days- apart from Motorsport of course... BTW DTM and World Sidecars Brands next weekend. Lovely.

Cheers,

Alan

I always carry the D-Lux 3 on raw and aperturel. It is truly an under-rated camera.

Hi Stevez4,

How are you using Aperture with D-Lux 3 RAW files? I've heard about hacking the plist file so that MacOS accepts DNGs shoot with a D-Lux 3 - do you do it that way, or is there another?

I am using my D-Lux 3 since about 4 weeks (besides of my R9+DMR) because it is a very handy camera. I make RAW-pictures only and they are of a very high quality. But you can not compare them with the DMR-quality.

As to my understanding you can not dump the jpeg. The RAW files are not compressed. In any case the size is about 20 MB (like the DMR dng) = about 30 MB TIFF.

To convert the image files I am using CS2 or Lightroom. But since last week I take the DEMO-version of CS3 (looking for the ordered original) because of the better effects.

Be careful to use a SDHC-card. May be your computer will not accept the new format. In this case you will need an especial adaptor (you can buy a SanDisk combo).

Regards Hans, and much fun with your D-Lux 3
