sebastian Posted May 30, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted May 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) A little perspective on how far digital photography has come... Â I stumbled across the April, 1996 issue of "Popular Photography" at a thrift store, with its headline "Are digital cameras ready to take on 35mm?" Â It tested a few of the cameras available then. Â The point and shoots ran from .12 to .38 MP, price range US$739-$1,500. Most were considered capable of making a whopping 3.2" X 2.4" print at 200 dpi. Â There were a few DSLR's, too. Best of the bunch was the Nikon/Kodak DCS 460. 6.2 MP, 12 second write speed, 10" X 15" prints, $27,995. Â Memory cards ran $50-$150 per Mb. That's mega, not giga. Â So as we all grouse about what our cameras can't do, or could do better... a little thanks to all those fine folks in the white lab coats who have persevered at making our little black boxes better, cheaper, and a lot more fun to play with. Â And to the photographers who spent the $27,995 to help pay off some of the R&D as well as provide valuable feedback for future developments. This continues today, you see lots of it in this forum.
