M 262 sensor is technically different to M 240

I remember speaking with one of the Leica people at the M8 launch and he told me that the rangefinder changes had been a challenge. I suspect the real issue was that the two main adjustments - the roller eccentric and the arm offset - lost the desired orthogonality and so became more inter-dependent which made setting it up an iterative pain. So it's all credit to Leica for sorting it out.

I was just going to say that exact same thing.

Edit:  Mark, that was a elegantly written sentence, reducing a complex paragraph of information into less than a sentence.

Mark, whilst I fully agree with your pointing out the improvements in the M240 RF/VF (IIRC you were the first to point them out)  I still think that, as soon as Leica got their new adjustment rig running, it was quite possible to get the system calibrated properly - My lens set was - and still is- without focusing issues on my M9. But yes, some older lenses and an early-digital Summilux 50 asph took some work by Leica to get them into line.

I've no doubt at all that the improvements happened over time and that the older cameras benefitted from a new understanding on how to get it right. So late new production or cameras returned for recalibration are probably fine. My M9s mostly are but they struggle with the most difficult lenses where the M240 does not. As I said, all credit to Leica for making progress.
