tredlie Posted December 13, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear All we are getting ready for a trip the Death Valley trying to shoot the stars ( ). I will like want to have exposure times of up to 30 sec, which I thought the M9 would handle nicely. That seems to be true for the A more. But when it comes to manual mode which would be needed the M9 is done at 8 sec. So what is left is the bulb mode. Then I would need a cable release, ok so far. So if I want to do 25 sec, I start counting? Well, the seconds are counted in the viewer, but that may be hard to see if the camera is pointed to the sky. Am I missing something, or do I have to start practicing counting. cheers Tred
Advertisement Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Hi tredlie, Take a look here longer than 8sec exposure on M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Peter_S Posted December 13, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2015 In A mode in the night the camera will likely auto-expose at 32 seconds. You see this in the viewfinder. If not, a) smaller aperature, b ) underexpose or c) go on self-timer mode, release with the lens cap on, and take it off as it counts down. I would get a wire release, anyways... Actually I was taking some long exposures the other day. The 'B' setting works rather more like a 'T' setting in that tripping the shutter button opens the shutter, then tripping it again closes the shutter. As for counting, well I use the stopwatch function on a smartphone ....
tredlie Posted December 15, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted December 15, 2015 Thanks All never thought of the cell phone as a timer. Good idea cheers Tred
Guest )-( Posted December 16, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 16, 2015 Try it out to see for yourself but I find the shutter count in the viewfinder easy enough to see without holding your eye to it. I normally fire the shutter in B, then manouevre myself into a position where I can see the exposure time. Beats starting at a smartphone instead of the stars. jmahto Posted December 17, 2015 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2015 Get a cable release. I have a very old one from film camera days. Last time I went to Death Valley, I shot with M9 (now I have M240). I loved the results from that. Have fun.
