jim0266 Posted December 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lensrentals got their first body late last week and I jumped on it. Post any questions you want me to check out. My only digital M experience is with my M-E. One thing not mentioned anywhere I discovered: You cannot change the frame line colors to red like in the 240. Must have been one way to reach the lower price point for this model. I do like the LED frame lines, however. They make the frame lines in my other M's look downright dingy. Also like how they auto adjust intensity to the ambient light. Frame lines show the same coverage area as in my Leica M2. Love this! No way is the shutter silent (Can you say Fuji X100?), but it has a different sound compared to the M9/M-E. From my memory the 262 sounds a lot like the 240, but I've only used that camera once for 20 mins at a show. The 262 is more muffled and confident. The M9/M-E is like a whiny child. Startup time from powering on or sleep mode is fast, virtually instant. You will not complain about missing shots. I had read some people have slow startup times with the 240. I would not be annoyed with this like I am with the Fuji X100 series. My Leica M-E is just as fast starting up as the 262. One nice change from the M9 when using exposure compensation: when a +- number is dialed in and you half press the shutter button, the EC +- number appears on each shutter press. This serves as a nice reminder that it's set and to what value.
Advertisement Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Hi jim0266, Take a look here I have a Leica M 262 in my hands for the next week. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jim0266 Posted December 7, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted December 7, 2015 Found another difference between the 240 and the 262: The M240 offer spot and and multi-metering options. The 262 only offers the classic heavily center-weighted metering. Is this another benefit of live view in the 240 or another way to "lessen" this camera compared to the 240 to make a distinction between the two? Sounds exactly like what I expected it to be, the M240 generation of M-E, and just the right product for Leica at this point in the M240's product cycle. Were I buying a color digital rangefinder today, this is absolutely the one I would buy. As it is, I was extremely happy with their previous stripped-down digital M and am very glad to have bought an M-E earlier this year at a terrific price. I intend to keep it (and my 1st gen M Monochrom) for many years to come.
Monochrome Posted December 7, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 7, 2015 -can you tell the difference in weight? (aluminum vs brass) -how does the black chrome look to you? -you feel the LED framelines are to bright in a dark situation? -can you make the same picture both with the ME an the M262 (same lens, exposure, iso) and post it here? -can you make several exposures in RAW without the processor shutting down? I hope you will enjoy your week with the camera!
01af Posted December 7, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 7, 2015 You cannot change the frame-line colors to red like in the m (Typ 240). For a long time, I thought the red frame lines were just an infantile way of adding whistles and bells ... but heck no. In really low light, when focusing via the rangefinder patch is on the brink of becoming impossible, the red frame-line colour really is a relief for the eyes. Found another difference between the M (Typ 240) and the M (Typ 262): The [former] offers spot and and multi-metering options. The [latter] only offers the classic heavily center-weighted metering. Is this another benefit of live-view in the M (Typ 240) ...? Yes, indeed. The so-called 'advanced metering modes' depend on live-view. So—no live-view, no advanced metering modes. But then, who needs anything else but center-weighted integral metering? On my M (Typ 240), I never use anything else.
microview Posted December 7, 2015 Share #6 Posted December 7, 2015 When framing pics at a city farm (sheep, goats, hens etc!) I found the red frame lines for 90mm FOV prompted one to frame the subject more than did the white.
jim0266 Posted December 8, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted December 8, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) -can you tell the difference in weight? (aluminum vs brass) My M-E with a Thumbie attached, body copy and battery came it at 606 grams on my scale. The 262 with battery and body cap came in at 610 grams -how does the black chrome look to you? Looks great. Very deep black, more satiny in color. Doesn't seem to attract or hold fingerprints. -you feel the LED framelines are to bright in a dark situation? I don't find them too bright. They dim down nicely but are definitely brighter than standard illuminated M's. I didn't have any problems finding focus in really dim light when comparing to my M-E or film Leicas. 0Iaf above found the red better in low light. YMMV. How good your eyes are could play a part. Mine are pretty good still. For those with poorer vision perhaps the red frames makes a difference. -can you make the same picture both with the ME an the M262 (same lens, exposure, iso) and post it here? I will post some RAW samples from both cameras once I have time to make some good examples. -can you make several exposures in RAW without the processor shutting down? No glitches or shutdowns so far. I was able to take 35 photos in one minute (did this twice). Several times I fired off 8 frames as fast as the buffer will allow. Using a Samsung Pro 16GB 90MBs card the camera would take 7 photos, hesitate for a half second and fire off the 8th frame.
jim0266 Posted December 8, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted December 8, 2015 Was able to make a quick video of the shutter sound made by the 262, versus the M-E and a classic M2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2RIz5xtxdI
jim0266 Posted December 8, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted December 8, 2015 One nice touch I discovered, which is not on the M-E, but assume is on the 240. When the camera is turned on or woken up, the set ISO is displayed in the viewfinder until you touch the shutter button.
Bill Livingston Posted December 8, 2015 Share #10 Posted December 8, 2015 You are discovering a lot that us M240 users love about our cameras. I have my M-P set up pretty much exactly how your 262 is... and I get exactly the same results and can make exactly the same observations. Nice camera, isn't it? Looking forward to hearing how you get with using it and then developing the DNG files. There is a bit of a learning curve... we all go through that... but I'm stunned by the quality of images I end up with now... Enjoy....!
Perioeci Posted December 8, 2015 Share #11 Posted December 8, 2015 Would you provide ISO 3200 and 6400 raws of a fairly contrasty, but also somewhat dark scene shot at EV 0, -1 and -2? Much appreciated,Dan
Reiep Posted December 8, 2015 Share #12 Posted December 8, 2015 + 1 on Perioeci's request, it's The kind of shots I do a lot. And thanks for your feedback, the 262 is becoming more and more interesting for me.

jim0266 Posted December 8, 2015 Author Share #14 Posted December 8, 2015 Would you provide ISO 3200 and 6400 raws of a fairly contrasty, but also somewhat dark scene shot at EV 0, -1 and -2? Much appreciated, Dan I'll try. My plan is to post a bunch of RAW files people can download and play with. That probably won't happen until next week though. Could not find anything in the 240 manual about showing the ISO on startup or wake, but it was late and I could have missed it. Based on the limited RAW files so far, the ones out of the 262 seem easier to deal with than the M-E. I can make the M-E look pretty much the same but it takes more work. colonel Posted December 8, 2015 Share #16 Posted December 8, 2015 I know its a bit of work, but if you can record the sound of the 262 shutter and the M-E shutter (it sounds like you don't have access to a M240 - pity) from the same distance with the same device (can use one of the recording apps for the iphone or android) and post it, it would be great
Sean ASA Posted December 8, 2015 Share #17 Posted December 8, 2015 In your samples if possible please find some willing models to enable a skin tone comparison. This has been where the ME shined and the 240 faultered with orange too warm tones. Other scenes are subjective, I don't mind warmed landscapes but our ability to notice incorrect skin tone is astute. Thanks
