Seriously, I remember when Nikon made the N90s (F90s) and it was thought to be a "second body" camera that a pro might carry or at least it was quietly marketed that way.  The big Nikon F4 was the professional camera and if you still weren't sure they made a F4Press!  It was so simple back then.

I was an amateur and knew it was ok to buy the N90s, but I should never try and shlep around an F4!  :)

Also, Tiny Manley is getting one.

Question:  Do members here believe the S is a professional camera?

Tina received hers the other day. She was having fun learning and experimenting with it and posted some photos to one or another of the mailing lists I admin.  :)

Did Tina immediately put her 75 Summilux on it?  Or, did she get the kit lens?  Has she decided how she is going to shoot it?

When last she posted, she was experimenting both with the 24-90 and with some of her M and R lenses. I think she likes the ease of shooting with the zoom so far, but I'm looking forward to seeing where she goes with it.

A real pro is not looking at the camera only - he ist looking at the whole system and what he will

need of this system. Comparing Canon and Nikon and Leica system gives the answer - as far as they do

not use medium format cameras. But in reality it does not matter, what a pro is using or not. What

really does matter is, what the individual "normal" photographer does like to use. That is simple

because there are not such a lot of pros but a lot of other photographers beyond these even a

considerable number o which can afford to buy a Leica.

I'm afraid, we would be starting another similar discussion which is already in the other threads. My question is, if " pro" people who have to make a living of it, buy the camera to do their work. I'm not really intersted in the fact if anyone believes it's a professional camera, rather how many pro's really buy it.

It's a bit like the discussion: Mondern paintings. I know a few peolpe who buy mondern paintings. There's a difference between actually saying you would buy it , if, if, if, you had the money and the persons who realy buy it.

You can't buy anything, just because it is believed to be "good art" but " ugly" or "not worth while" . One has to like it and hang it to the wall in his own house. Different perspectives. There's IMHO a difference in perspective between the people who have to make a living of it and other "believers" .

I'm interested in the perspective of the people who have to earn a living with it.

Why? Their ability to purchase and use the camera bears no relationship to your photographic ability.. Even the most basic P&S in the right hands can produce imaginative & excellent images..

Professional photographers are not a separate species of super-rational hyper- judicious creatures who understand everything better and are less prone to personal preferences or even prejudices than the rest of the feeble amateur world.

Some are wise and some are foolish and most are human.

I do not know exactly why, but I still am interested in it. Maybe because I like statistics?  Will the SL catches pro's like the Nikon D1 cought them for instance?

Unless you personally talk to every individual purchaser of the SL how will you know who is a Pro or otherwise? Statistics = another way to point the needle everywhichway...

It might be more easy if the puchaser told in this thread if he was a pro and why he bought /ordered one? ;)

Surely this Forum does not cover every Leica user worldwide. I would imagine most Pro's (Leica or otherwise) don't even visit this Forum.. So therefore any statistics you glean are mainly from a very small percentage of well heeled amateurs..

Indeed I wish you well...L

I am not a "pro" but I do own a photography business. My only role is overlook the business and financial aspect. I never involve in photography aspect of it, as I do not have the time or interest. We have 4 full time photogs and another 2 working part time. We initially used phase one MF and Nikon. After the release of Nikon d800s we sold all MF and now primarily use D810s and D4S.

As a background info, We did purchase 2 Sony A7rIIs with full set of lenses soon after release. Initially there was so much interest that they were forced to take turns to use it. Some even traded gigs to get to use the Sony system. But after a few weeks the Sony system just sat in the shelf with very rare use. When I discussed with them, all of them had the same issue. Poor ergonomics, cumbersome work flow, extremely slow and unresponsive and most important "not a complete system".

I ordered the Leica SL and lens for personal use and having a blast in the limited time I got to use it. I did take it to the studio couple of days back. Again there was very keen interest  and after a day of using, the feedback was the same. Poor ergonomics (please don't jump on me, the ergonomics are indeed bad for professional use, user interface is not being intuitive,  poor placement of MF focus aid, instead of being customizable) and again the issue of  "lack of complete system". Availability of AF primes and long lenses will be critical.  So we will not be ordering it for our business any time in the near future. But on a positive note, everyone who used the system commented on the responsiveness (Leica here nailed it compared to Sony) colors and "pop".

Again this is specific for our business model. Our core business is products, with emphasis on both photo and video. Just FYI, video is growing but most growth is in low end web based short clips. The demand for high quality 4K video has still not taken off.

Where is the MF focus aid then, and why is it badly placed?
