elansprint72 Posted May 29, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 29, 2007 You picked a good spot Allan. Was the track originally completely paved with those bricks? Must have been interesting to drive on.
boilerdoc Posted May 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 30, 2007 There were originally several million large bricks used to pave the 2.5 mile track. And they are all still there under the asphalt! Imagine the job of laying those puppies in the early 1900's!!!! Steve

abrewer Posted May 30, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted May 30, 2007 Hi Pete! Hi Steve! Hi Ray! Originally, and this predates the first auto race on the track (it actually first hosted a motorcycle race) the track was gravel! It rained (this is true, I'm not making it up) and there was such a mess that not only would the cyclists not return, but the track owners (anybody wanna' guess their names? & they're pretty familiar names too!) had to pave the thing with brick pavers to get anyone to drive on it. That's how it gets the nickname "The Brickyard". Modern times demanded the pavers yield to the smooth paved surface of today, but this "yard of bricks" remains as historical testament to the track's origins. BTW, Pete, the tradition here is the winning driver will kneel and kiss those bricks after he picks up his trophy in Victory Lane!
