Vip Posted November 15, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The new SL appears to be a gorgeous camera in any spec. But… My God the lens size are impressive. Where is the Leica M heritages? Even after seeing the impressive MTF graph this lens are beasts. Where is the SL size benefit over Leica S? It is a 24x36 mm sensor not a medium format.

Ingo Posted December 31, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 31, 2015 Well, it's a zoom and covers 24-90mm, it has autofocus, it has image stabilization. This needs a litte space if you want to built a zoom lens that is equal to a prime. I don't want to miss the lens. I can do 90% of my pictures with it. Jared Posted December 31, 2015 Share #3 Posted December 31, 2015 It's basically the same size and weight as a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. A little larger diameter, but same length and similar weight. It's a bit slower, but also has more reach. It seems to be in line with what other manufacturers are producing, but it seems huge because of what Leica 'M' users are used to. -Jared
HeinzX Posted January 1, 2016 Share #4 Posted January 1, 2016 It is not possible to come down with (D)SLR lenses to similiar sizes as the M lenses. Two reasons - the M lenses need no electronic and their construction is not a telecentric one. Once there was a relevant article in the LFI. That is one reason why I stick to my M 240. The best lenses of the (D)SLR producers have almost the same size and weight, when maximum aperture and zoom range is similiar. There is not a lot of difference in weight and size between the 24/90 of Leica and the 24/70 2.8 II from Canon.
Vip Posted January 1, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted January 1, 2016 Latest lens needs telecentric optical scheme to benefit a better sensor performance. We are comparing a DSLR to an M. SL is a mirrorless, so the distance between sensor and flange is not so different. Even considering the space for electronic and autofocus look the size of an 16/21 or a 28/50 for M!!! P.S. I do not understand why my topic has been splitter in two tread
Peter Walker Posted January 2, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 2, 2016 Having carried the 24-90mm on the SL for a few weeks now, I can testify that it's not too heavy. The lens / camera balances well on the left hand.
