battery life experience with the S (typ 007)

Can any users comment on what you typically have seen thus far in use?

With my S2 I got a bought a second battery and rotate them. However I found that I could easily achieve more than 1000 exposures and use of the preview with some charge remaining in a single battery. That has been consistent over about 15000 exposures I made with the S2 so far.

The battery for the S (Typ 007) while the same profile is of higher capacity. I expected that, since Liveview, video, GPS & Wifi may place extra demands on the power requirements.

I have had just two photoshoots with the S so far, being about 250 & 300 exposures and use of preview and menus etc of course. No use of video, GPS or Wifi. After each shoot the capacity remaining is reported as 40%. I can't afford to test that total capacity until the battery charge is exhausted currently since in case it interrupted a photoshoot.

If that's the long term typical result, it suggests that I can expect only about maybe half as many exposures with a full charge, without using those extra features and despite the higher rating of the new battery.

There are no spare batteries in my country at all thus far. Not many cameras either as far as I know.

Incidentally, despite the advice by Leica Camera and their local product specialist to not use the old battery in the new camera I did try one. Turning the camera on for the first time it did in fact update the firmware in both of my lenses.

However the camera then reported that the battery type is not supported and it would not operate... Which is what Leica Camera told me in the instructions in the first place of course.

As this stands I shall need to keep my S2 body longer until I can get at least one spare battery. That's a financial disappointment but a first world problem of course

I just finished a shoot with about 1000 frames. Was using the battery grip with extra battery: at the end of the shoot, camera was still showing full charge. When I took the grip off to put the camera away, it showed one "bar" on the battery display. Don't know exactly what percentage remaining that indicates.

I didn't use live view, video, or wifi. Only moderate image review on the rear screen during the shoot.

That is very much a 1st World problem, Geoff, having a S2 in case the battery runs out on your S007! I hope it is resolved soon, though. once Leica's battery source ramps up production to rates slightly higher than that of Leica's S007 production line. They must be hand-whittling those batteries.

I have the grip and a spare battery on order. The national Leica Camera office has just told me overnight that they are expecting the first spare batteries here this week, which is great news.
Albireo, I'm a bit further from Wetzlar than you I think, at the end of a long supply chain. We are only about a couple of percent of the world market for Leica Camera here. I was in Vienna a few weeks ago, too, although I didn't get to that shop!

on my third shoot with the camera  I was pleased to find that the battery on its third charge cycle did much better. First and second shoots after about 250 exposures and reviewing on LCD the indication was about 40% remaining.
Yesterdays shoot I made 400 exposures and more image previewing (by the models) but still had about 50% charge remaining.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yes, thanks. I just haven't done this formally with previous new Leica batteries. Batteries in my M8, M9 and M (Typ 240) previously have worked fine over my years of use without any formal conditioning routine. I tend to, from new, just use the battery until it is nearly discharged and then rotate in my spare. Here I was reluctant to keep shooting until that point because there were no spares available. I do have one now.
