Weekend with the S007

My local Leica rep loaned me an S007 to try out this past weekend. I also had the 45, 70 and 120 (although the 70 has some focusing issues -- my guess is that given that it's been around the block something got messed up internally).

Anyway, I went to a local crafts fair and shot the 45 and 120 together and also my Sony A7rii with 55mm 1.8 and my Leica M with 35 Lux and 50 Apo.

I must say, I *loved* the S.  It just felt so great to photograph with such a well built camera with its amazing viewfinder.  I also love the simplicity of the controls.  I was able to adjust to the system very quickly.

In terms of the Sony A7rii: it was very bright and contrasty outside and I had so much trouble seeing through the EVF that I put the camera away after about an hour.

My M was, as always, great to use. I've been using M cameras for about 10 years so am very comfortable with them.

Back to the S: The thing that most blew me away - that I can't show you - is the prints.  They are simply spectacular.  I am seriously considering getting one.

Here are some photos from the day  - most with the S. Some with the M and Sony, you can hover over the info button to see or go by filename:  jk files are the S, DSC the Sony, and L the M.

Great Work - I'm seduced & sorely tempted -> S

Thanks.  Me too.  The images on the website don't really do justice to the images on my computer or, especially, in print.

If you watch in slideshow mode that seems to show them the best.

Great post, you hit all the major points summing up my findings also on the state of art systems today.  The S system: great imaging, viewfinder, simplicity.  The Sony is getting many accolades (new camera), evf is the future I understand and still a distant third compared to ovf and rf.  When I purchased an S it ended my Nikon and Canon purchases, I sold many items from both systems and medium format (Contax) to fund it, well worth it and no regrets.  I enjoyed your slideshow and noticed great dynamic range, do you have any findings among the various systems?

  Thanks. I have a few. Here is the S with 70mm (top) vs the A7Rii with 55mm (bottom)
