Just returned....

After upgrading my M8.2 (with coffee stain) to an M240 a couple of years ago I have returned to the fold with a very tidy M8u.   Needs a pixel remap due to a couple of dead lines visable above base iso, but a service of some sort has been built into the purchase price.

Took a few minutes to refresh with an old friend but I am compelled to make a quick post just to say that the M8 - even after 10 years - is a still real contender.  OK - many quirks (and I am not going to repeat them in this post) but it remains the cheapest entry to the digital M.  Leave off the UV-IR and B&W (even off the camera jpegs) are sublime.

The M240 is a great camera (and have no intention of using the M8u to replace it - I have bought it for other reasons) but in reality, for most of my keepers the M8 would have probably sufficed.

Want one - buy one.  Got one - keep it!

Oh - and those that may remember me giving away my spare batteries away here when i surrendered my M8.2 to Leica - yes I do now regret it!  Such is life (but if anyone has one spare...).

James, an interesting commentary on your liking for the first Leica digital rangefinder. I know how you feel. I once owned two M8s when I needed daily backup. When I upgraded I kept the younger one, had the coffee stain renewed by Leica and initially used it for IR work. More recently it has come back into use as part of my rotational plan. It calls for mental readjustment like curing the expectations of live-view. I am convinced it will outlive many users, if used considerately, and give impeccable results withing its design parameters. Glad you have been reunited.
