Mike Rawcs Posted May 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies for my first posting being a problem. I've just attempted to update my M8 to firmware 1.102 - the download to the SD card seemed to go ok but when I inserted the card back into the camera I received a message "do you want to update to firmware 0.00?". I selected yes and pressed SET and received message "Attention Error Update Failed". I would normally contact leica UK but it is a Bank Holiday here in the UK so I won't be able to do so until next Tuesday. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Am I correct in pressing SET (the download instructions just assume that users know what to press) and should the firmware have showed 0.00 or 1.102? I'm updating the firmware in anticipation of receiving a lens for the camera after a 2 1/2 month wait! I have received my Leica IR filters and, to be fair, my local Leica dealer did obtain a 28mm F2.8 Elmarit for me but it did not come complete with a lens hood. I'm suspicious of anything that is not complete so I would not purchase the lens and have had to wait. . . . and wait. I'll post some photographs when I receive a lens. Best wishes to all and thanks in advance for any advice. Mike.

Max Alfy Posted May 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 26, 2007 Just a thought, did you unzip the file before loading it on the SD card? Max
carstenw Posted May 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 26, 2007 Unzip the file, and you will get a file called m8-1_102.upd. Format the card in the camera, insert it into a card reader, and copy the file to the root directory of a card. Turn camera on with full battery. It should ask if you want to update to 1.102, not 0.00.
Shootist Posted May 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 26, 2007 First you have to unZIP the file you downloaded from Leica. The file name should be m8-1_102.upd and should be 4,662,750 in size. Then you place that file in the ROOT of the card. That is in the main directory of the card, IE NOT in any folder on the card. Then insert that card in the camera and turn the camera on. Most all the problems updating the firmware are caused be the user not unZIPping the file before copying it to a card or from putting the file in a folder on the card
Minos Posted May 26, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 26, 2007 I have had exactly the same situation. However, I quickly realized I hadn't unzipped the file before putting it on the SD card. Starting over, I first unzipped it on the computer in order to obtain the .upd file. I proceeded to place it on the SD card. The update procedure went smooth as silk. Enjoy. Mike Rawcs Posted May 26, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted May 26, 2007 Thank you all: as you gathered, I hadn't un-zipped the file. I followed the Leica instuctions, which said "Save the unzipped file m8_xx.upd" etc. I followed your instructions and all was well. Now all I require is a lens. I've used Leica many times over the years but I'm now starting again and hopefully staying. I have tried auto-everything cameras, film and, briefly, digital but find them all much too cumbersome. I also find myself relying on the technology instead of thinking for myself. I telephoned Solms last week to mention the seemingly UK-wide shortage of lenses and was corrected: there is a world-wide shortage of lenses! I was reminded that they are a manufactured product and to rush would compromise quality, wouldn't it? I came off the telephone feeling slightly told off. Thanks once again, Mike. I waited 8 months or more for a WATE and then had to settle for one without the Frankenfinder package deal. I've now got a similar problem with the Tri-Elmar and have had to make do with a used one for the time being. Bob.

Sorry you felt that way, being told off that is. But they are correct. Leica lenses are hand assembled, checked and adjusted. This takes time. Also the glass in the lens takes time to manufacture. As others have said, "Leica is a small company". They don't have factories in China, Japan or Thailand. Just look at all the online dealers here in the USA. You will see most of them only have 1/3, if not less, of the lenses in stock at any point in time. Not only that but when they do get a lens and post it on there website that it is in fact in stock it's gone in no time. Leica was caught completely off guard with the amount of M8 sales and that everyone that bought a M8 wanted NEW glass to go with it. Prior to getting the M8 I have 3 M3's and 5 lenses. A 40mm Summicron-C, a 50mm Cron, 2 90mm Tele-Elmarit and a 135 Elmarit with eyes. Now I have sold my old 50 Cron and bought a new one, bought a new 24 ASPH, new ASPH 28 Elmarit, new 35 Cron ASPH, 75 Cron APO ASPH and I'm looking at the 135 APO f/3.4 and the 90 f/4 Micro kit. When does the MADNESS stop.

Mike Rawcs Posted May 28, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted May 28, 2007 Slightly told off but amused - I do understand how the popularity of the M8 and the subsequent demand for 6-bit coded lenses has caused the shortage.
cwf Posted May 28, 2007 Share #12 Posted May 28, 2007 At the risk of taking this thread even farther afield, kindly let me note here that the shortage of new lenses has led me to create what I call the B&H Leica Lens Index. This is the number of Leica-M lenses (counting chrome and black separately) shown as In Stock on B&H's website. There is no magic in using B&H; it is convenient since their website offers the option of showing In Stock only on a search. The BBLL Index has been stuck at 7 of late, but I haven't re-counted in the past few days. Since I am counting black and chrome lenses separately, that number indicates what I would think is a severe shortage of new Leica M lenses. Of course, this is not as bad as having a plentiful supply of lenses that are not up to Leica's standards.
