I've been reading this forum for a while, but I just picked up my M8 yesterday (Ser# 332xxxx), so I thought it was time to drop in and say hello. I've appreciated all the comments and advice I've read here and hope it will all prove useful some day. This is definitely one nice bunch of folks.

Although I've had my camera less than 24 hours, I've already had my first "issue". Occasionally, the rangefinder stops rangefinding with my Ultron 28/1.9 & adaptor. The first time I took the lens off and put on an old Canon M-mount 35mm that I have here, and it worked fine. And the Ultron worked fine on a Bessa that I borrowed the Canon from. I put them back and the Ultron seemed to be fine. However, I went for a walkabout and a couple more times, the rangefinder stopped working. Once I was able to recover by simply turning the power off and on. And once it seemed to come back by itself. I did notice that the rectangular focus area in the center turns red, which is probably telling me something, but I don't know what. I'll try it for a while with another lens and see what happens.

In any case, I'm looking forward to hanging out here more in the future.

Make sure it's not telling you that your finger is covering the little rangefinder window to the right of the viewing window. When I first got my M8, I was so nervous that this happened to me two or three times before I stopped panicking and realized that when I was holding the camera, the middlefinger of my right hand covered the window. Naturally, after you changed lenses, you would then have moved your finger off and everything seems normal again.

I think you solved the problem! I tried putting my finger over the rangefinder window, and that's exactly what I was seeing. Boy am I embarrassed! But at least I learned something. Many thanks for the reply. It is much appreciated. I'll be more careful to keep my fat fingers out of the way from now on.

Hahaha. Don't be embarrassed, you're not alone. After reading for months about M8s breaking down, freezing, and creating green blobs and purple blacks, all of us get a little nervous. I'm glad I could help. Enjoy your camera, it is the greatest thing I've bought in a long time.
