Baddog Posted September 24, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 24, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those who are thinking about purchasing the new Epson P800, Ctein has written a very imformative review of it on "the Online Photographer" (TOP) website. A couple of things that stood out to me were: using the wireless mode works perfectly. The use of "Printer Manages Colours" as opposed to custom profiles he claims is the way to go (for most images) also the preferred way on the 3880 as well. This statement really caught my attenion as i use a 3880 as well as a pro 7900 and religiously use custom profiles for all my work. So i fired up the 3880 picked a difficult image and printed it both ways through lightroom. My printers and monitor are calibrated and i view my prints under a D50 lightbox so i was very suprised to see that the "printer manages colour" print was better than the profiled one. i think this will be a great benefit for those who are casual printers and find all the profile stuff a bit intimidating. Much as we all chafe at Windows, this particular statement is false, as he half-conceded after two comments were posted.I'm sure Ctein produces marvelous prints. And you can learn a lot and get things worth thinking about from the articles and posts. However, for some reason gurus of photo printing like him and Andrew Rodney make occasional emphatic statements about how something should be done that are actually questionable, a matter of taste, valid only for certain goals, and so on. It is very timely as I am about to purchase a P800, upgrading from an R3000 which has served me well for four trouble free years. It would have been helpful if Ctein had tested and reviewed the P800 roll paper feature, but the review otherwise was sensible and positive. I had not heard of Ctein previously and was very interested to read that he offers a Dye Transfer printing service....certainly a photo printing guru! This new roll feed is very well made and not to be confused with some of the other offering that have come with some of the cheaper printers in the past. BrianP Thanks Brian, at a quick glance this morning that appears to be a very in depth review, and will I think prove to be extremely helpful to me in the future. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to post it. As for the Epson paper give away...sadly I am located in Australia (and in a remote rural area at that)....where Epson gives us nothing....too bad!
