35 FLE prices...

I've never understood what a warranty would mean for a lens, surely it either works or it doesn't, but perhaps I am being too crude in my understanding. There is an element of risk in doing private deals but with prices dropping a little, I think it is better for my pocket.

Well, might be good for you to peruse the lens forum and read all the threads about issues with various lenses....aperture rings that loosen, focus mechanisms that fail to loosen, focus calibration issues, excessive flaring (see 50 APO), etc.   Leica provides a warranty (and Passport) for a reason.....and reputable dealers do likewise, which allows the user to put gear through its paces.  Even when service might involve Leica, a good dealer may offer exchange or gear to borrow in the interim.

Apart from warranty, I prefer to build dealer relationships so that I might also benefit from good treatment (price, service, timely action, etc) on possible future transactions (purchases, trades, sale or service).   And because I think it's important to support local and/or independent shops if possible.

Short term savings versus longer term view.....YMMV.

Thanks for this. I think you are right, YMMV.

In London virtually all the dealers I used (for years I might add) have now closed down. It is a sad state of affairs but this is the internet age and whilst I would have been minded to agree with you several years ago, as a Londoner there is little point in building such a relationship. Dealers come and go. Lower overheads with an online presence amongst other things is driving this. This is what they tell me.

The Leica store in Mayfair is just brilliant, they offer incredible service, you are a Leica customer with the camera + lens round your neck... its that simple. They don't serve customers who only paid retail for their kit...

In terms of the other things you have mentioned... I have been warned to on my head be it. The Leica warranty is transferrable although I am told Passport is not.

Well, I've discovered this thing called the telephone....along with email....this has served to help me build relationships with reputable Leica dealers, with some terrific people and Leica experts, outside my city.  And they ship, and advertise online, too.  Some of them join discussions on this forum.  It's those very shops and people that I'd like to keep afloat.  Different strokes...

Like I said. Thanks for all this insight. If you could explain what a telephone is that would be really helpful. I've not heard of this. I live in the jungle. Clearly.

Dear all,

Many thanks for all the comments on this thread. I can say that since 1pm BST, I've been the proud new owner of a 35f1.4 FAG lens. I met the original owner at Kings Cross station. We sat down and had a coffee and discussed Leica in general and the lens. It came in the hygiene box, outer box, complete with certificate, booklet, etc etc and even the original plastic bag, with Leica barcode, both caps, hood and leather pouch. The seller was a total gent and cash was paid. The lens is brand new. I've taken around 50 shots walking around close to my place of work. I attach an unremarkable image herewith. Who said the first 1000 photographs are rubbish? I'm inclined to agree to need to bond with my new addition. It feels very nice on the camera and viewfinder blockage is very decent, given its size. I've been shooting with a 28f2 for the past three weeks so this is a revelation to have the viewfinder black. The new metal hood is a dream. One initial observation is that the aperture ring feels different to my other Leica lenses. I'll be taking this to Leica Mayfair at the weekend for a once over.

With best,

Congrats! First image from a little park between Univisity of London Senate House and British Museum? If so- that's where I was having lunch and I walked past you with a digital Leica in hand and I did a double take!

Wow, no way! Would be great to do a photo walk or have a coffee... And talk cameras. If that isn't too forward.

It seems original owner of your Summilux 35 FLE was seduced by new Zeiss Distagon M 35mm f1.4.

Let me guess, s/h dealer was Aperture?

Yes: nice place to buy and sell (in my opinion). Bought  my first film Leica and black paint 50 Lux there, years ago.

Not sure that there's anything they would say if your pics turn out as above. However I wouldn't get rid of the v4 Summicron for a while: it's a nice lens (I have had about four and sometimes miss it – though I miss the 35  2.8 Summaron far more!) and sometimes you might prefer to get out with a less large/heavy 35mm.

The feel probably attributable to the floating element.

Thanks... I like to have a coffee and talk cameras more than anything ;-)

Am in love but it is heavy. The metal hood is just a dream.
