Zeiss Finders / diopters?

After trying the Leica finders including the "frankenfinder" , I have settled on two Zeiss finders . The 21mm does a decent job of approximating the "actual FOV at distance" for the 18mm setting on the WATE. The 25/28 finder works for the 21 and the 24. One of the LUF members asked ....can you use a diopter on the finder ..I thought not until today ...the eyepiece fell off into my hand. Pretty lucky . In looking at the Zeiss Ikon ZM ..it appears that the diopter for the camera might fit the finder. Has anybody figured this out . I can get a better view with a plus 1.0 on the Leica rangefinder . These are actually in stock at BH for $44 ..considering the cost of the finder ..it would be a bargin if it works.

Rodger the 25 finder does it have enough room to cover a 15 voigltader on an M8 ?? Does it have lines to show the 25 and room outside of those lines also what are the dimensions of the zeiss Thanks David

David ...I don t think so. The 25/28 finder brightline is very near the edge ...you have outer frame which represents the 25mm and a partial frame inside that for 28mm. I think the confusing thing about deciding on the correct (for you) finders for the M8 is finding the right FOV. If you use the standard .its 1.33 x focal length ..you get 20....so the finder for the 15CV should show a FOV for a 20mm lens(35mm equivalent). The finders are generally set up to show the correct FOV at the minimum focusing distance.. this is less than the FOV at distance. So the finders are conservative..you get at least ..what you see. The theory is that you learn to adapt your framing as you use the finder more . You know to put the brightline on the edge . The other alternative is to use a slightly wider finder ...for example I use the 28mm frame for my 24mm lens . If I was using a 15mm I would need an 18 finder ..others would be happy with a 21mm. If you use a 25mm you will have to estimate the framing ..I would expect you could do this but it would not be as accurate .

I went with the Zeiss 21mm for the WATE and reason being is the Zeiss has less barrel distortion than the leica. It does distort but i can hold straight lines with it very well and that was important for me. It also does have a two lines on the side for paralax and than the normal 21mm lines which is very clear and bright.

I have thought about the longer finder 25/28 and may get that also and see which one i like better. It maybe i might like the longer one because i really get 2 focal lengths out of it and using the 21mm setting is sort of a guess right now and that is a pretty popular focal length for me and the finder is pretty tough to go by and also i get the 18mm setting which is 24mm and again a great focal length. I use the 16mm probably the least on the WATE and really you can guess here more than the other two. i may get the 24/28 and decide what to do . Starting to lean for the longer one at the moment. Really need to try these and see what is comfortable but i will stay with the Zeiss finders since they are probably the best out there overall, just not cheap

Very happily using the Leica 21-24-28 with a correction diopter (I'm +2). Although the framing isn't 100% it's highly useable, the clarity is the thing that works for me + only having to carry one viewfinder. It's too bulky in the carry case it comes with for my Domke bag - but I just use a little chamois bag and that works fine. If you use a diopter rather than wearing glasses, it's a pretty good solution.

Chris When I first looked at my finders it did not appear that a diopter could be added ..because the outside ring is not threaded . When the outside lens unscrewed and fell out , I realized that the Zeiss finders appear to use a 0.0 lens that looks replaceable with the Zeiss Ikon ZM camera diopter.....this would provide the best possible finder ...a corrected Zeiss. The 25/28 works great for me on either the 21 or 24 lenses..now if I can add a diopter ..I have a great solution. I have been searching the Zeiss sites to determine if the camera diopter can work on this finder.

I know where to find the diopters ..but I can t find anyone that knows if they work on the external finders....I will probably just order one and try it .. They are $33 at Adorama and they should be returnable as they are not special order.
