24 elmarit

Recommended Posts

Yes, it's a great lens with fantastic edge to edge detail. I am using it as my standard lens on the M8. However I am a bit frustrated by the size and the amount of viewfinder space which is blocked by the lens hood. Also, being a glasses wearer it's not that easy to cope with the framelines. Much as I like the 32mm angle of view, I am tempted to get the new 28mm elmarit which would seem like a better compromise. Am trying however to live with the 24mm a bit longer and resist the temptation. Would be interested to hear how you get on with yours.

Hi- I also wear glasses, but use a diopter attachment on the M8 (and M7) allowing me to take them off annd get my eye much closer. Even using a diopter+magnifier of 1.33 I can still see the 24 frame line. The intrusion into the frame is a problem, I may get a 35mm viewfinder for this. But I also have to say that the 28 elmarit is a great lens to have. It's punchier, higher contrast, but stopped down to f8 the contrast softens a bit in a nice way. It's small size and weight is wonderful. I think the 24 renders a more artistic and subtle tonality, and as you say edge to edge is amazing, and it's definitely sharper at 2.8 than the 28 elmarit. For street shooting, I''ll use the 28 much more, but for landscape the 24. best...Peter

I had the 24mm briefly and i really did love it except the frameline issue with the magnifier did bug me but out of the three the WATE, 21 and 24 i would say the 24mm is probably the sharpest and it does have some contrast going on too, for a landscape shooter the micro detail is hard to beat. damn talking myself into getting one again

Guy the 24 is a great lens. No real Leicaphile should be without it.

Thanks for the comments Peter, looks like I'll end up ordering the 28 elmarit (and then no doubt the wait for availability will give the 24 some more use). I may well end up keeping both, but suspect the 24 will then start to gather dust....

Ed you do make a great point it is a outstanding lens there is no question , it's just a tough one on a M8 if you use the magnifer which i tend to never take off and that is were my issue is and not in the results from it. I took that lens to Flagstaff and shot some buildings handheld no less and i thought i was shooting 4x5 the details were that good

Even though I have the 1.25x magnifier I very rarely ever use it. So the 24 works real well for me.

I don't even use the magnifier with the 75 cron.

Could be that the verticle allignment on my rangefinder is out a little and that is why I have a hard time using the magnifier.

My M8 is on it's way back to NJ and I have asked, if they don't replace my camera with a new one which they should, to check the verticle allignment and if they do replace it to check the new one before they send it out to me.

Oh darn I was going to ask for a black dot also and forgot to. Oh well.

Ed contact Robert Fisk and send a nice letter in the box explain all the issues and ask for a replacement camera. Just send the M8 inside the with the inner box and no batteries or accessories

I use it on an 0.58 M6 which, using the full width an height of the viewfinder, gives a reasonable approximation of 24mm. I really want to avoid external VFs and try to live with an imperfect solution. Use it much less on the M6 than the M8 but when I do, the quality is exceptional.

I bot my 24 as a result of seeing the images from all the lens in the range of 21 to 28 on ReidReviews (don't leave home without it).

I agree with Puts that it's the single lens an M user must have.

But, don't let me confuse anyone -- it's a brilliant lens.

Guy it is boxed up with a 75mm Cron (Needs to have the aperture ring detent increased), a 135 f/2.8 Elmarit (for coding), a letter explaining all the problems with the M8 and what I want done on the 2 lenses, Pictures/prints of the problems with the M8, A voucher for the 135, a printed copy of the original sales receipt and a CD with all the printed imaged, as edited, and original images, a copy of the letter in .DOC format and a PDF of the sales receipt.

In the letter I state that I really think they should replace the camera and not send it off to be fixed at my expense of lost time without the camera.

Hopefully they will replace it. Which is what should be done.

I called Robert the other day to get his take on the brass particle problem but I got a call back from someone else saying to send the camera in.

Thanks for your support.

Has anyone tested it against the new Zeiss ZM 25 mm Biogon? The french magazine Chasseur d'Images recently tested a range of Leica M and Zeiss ZM lenses and gave them about equal marks (top).

I'm curious because this is a focal length I don't have yet and I think it would see a lot of use on my M8.
