Hi all:

I just got 21mm/f1.4 few days ago, and it is really a good one!

And I just ordered a series 8 UVA, which can only stay inside of lens hood :-( little bit wired...have to say

Then I realize, if I have another series 8 filter, like circular polarizer, could I just put it also into the lens hood with the UVA? Or there is not enough space for them?

If anyone have a better solution for the filter, I'd love to learn. I know it can use some adapter ring, but I have no experience...

Thanks

Using both a polarizer and. UV at the same time is only going to cause reflections and flare - I.e. no good reason to do it.

To use a polarizer on such a wide lens is might work in some reflection through glass situations but as polarization depth varies with angle to the sun, is normally not a good idea outdoors.

A bigger problem is that you won't be able to rotate the polarizer under then hood.

Leica does make. a E86 filter adapter for the summilux - perhaps useful if you want to mount some Lee graduate ND filters.

Hope you make the most of the unique up close and wide aperture abilities of the lens.

Either you don't know that a 21 with a polariser will give you a peculiarly graded sky or you have a special purpose in mind.

Thanks! Actually I don't know that...graded sky? You mean like band?

Any suggestions for filters? Should I go with adapter ring?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I was thinking about how to rotate the filter once I screw it up... :-)

I would check E86 filter adapter first.

The light in the sky is polarised by different amounts depending on the direction you are looking. The maximum amount is 90° from the direction of the sun. Your polarising filter darkens the sky most in this direction; much less in the sun's direction. The 21mm lens covers a wide enough angle of the sky to produce a noticeable wave of light and dark (not bands). Narrower lenses do it too but the difference between the most filtered and least filtered is much less.

Hm. I'm sure that could be explained much better :) try Wikipedia.

There is only space for one filter in the lens hood and it might rattle a bit with some filters.  A little tape on the filter should stop the rattle if present.

The adapter:

Leica E82 Filter Adapter for Leica 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Lens

B&H # LEARS882 MFR # 14-481

The adapter takes 82mm filters, not difficult to find but a more limited selection exists than popular sizes.  This should change as more lenses are using 82mm these days.

If using the adapter and an 82mm filter there will be no provision for a lens hood,  so a seperate hood may be necessary, I believe B+W makes an 82mm WA metal hood.

I use a VND 82mm filter with this adapter and it works fine, but like with the Tri-Elmar e67 and the 18SEM e77 adapters one has to be aware of possible light leaks around the sides due to the vented construction. I carry black electrical tape with me for this reason. The e82 adapter is very prone to this problem due to its construction.

Leica put the vents in these adapters so as to aid in seeing the image through the VF while using the adapter. However, I prefer using the EVF with this setup since my Schneider VND is extremely wide and totally blocks the VF view.

Yes, and ebay has 82mm W/A hoods for very little cost.

I am interested to hear how well the 3 stop nd grad works, I use a 2 stop and find it useful, but haven't used a three stop version.
