albertknappmd Posted August 11, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have noticed that the AF and the microprism manual focus do not always concur. Is there a reason? Albert
Advertisement Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Hi albertknappmd, Take a look here Microprism and Leica S (006) Autofocus . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
albertknappmd Posted August 12, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted August 12, 2015 Let me be more precise... If you focus on an object, say for argument purposes a high contrast one, I find that when I do this that the Autofocus-derived setting and the manual setting sometimes differ, albeit by very small increments. I cannot find any pattern as it happens in not only the zoom but in primes. Have you experienced this? I spoke with David Farkas and Josh Lehrer at Leica Miami and they have heard and seen this. Their admonition is TRUST THE AF! Any comments? Albert
jip Posted August 17, 2015 Share #3 Posted August 17, 2015 Take a photo both ways and check which you prefer I would say.
albertknappmd Posted August 18, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted August 18, 2015 I did that originally and they seem to be identical yet why the slight difference?
jip Posted August 18, 2015 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2015 The depth of field probably makes it 'seem' the same
hoppyman Posted August 18, 2015 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2015 I suspect just normal variation in holding the camera, unless you were testing carefully on a good tripod. You will need to be slightly adjusting the camera angle to place the exact point that you are focusing on in the centre or within the collar area.Personally I just use the split image only, not the microprism collar. albertknappmd Posted August 19, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted August 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) That is a good point, Hoppy! The collar was identical in both the AF and Manual... It was the small central split screen that drove me crazy. Albert
albertknappmd Posted August 19, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted August 19, 2015 Dear Jip- I used a wide open aperture to eliminate this variable. good thought however! Thanks, Albert

Geoff I am confused with the "Collar Area" bit.......what is it? My mate at the Leica Store in KL has got me one to try so I guess I will find out soon enough if I am going to like it or not Thanks Neil
hoppyman Posted August 19, 2015 Share #10 Posted August 19, 2015 Neil the screen consists of a ground glass style matte field with a centre circle comprised by the split image area surrounded by a collar of microprism area. So the microprism area is a doughnut shape around the central split image disc area. Does that make sense?

jip Posted August 21, 2015 Share #14 Posted August 21, 2015 In my R8 this was the standard of course, I generally use the screen without the split image and just a circle filled with micro prisms.
