AEL and aperture

I have discovered that if I have the 'Zoom/Lock-button' set to AEL when you do a half press of the shutter button the aperture doesn't stop down to whatever aperture you have set. In all other settings it does stop down thus giving you a DOF preview

David,

It seems to me that you are right - setting the 'Zoom/Lock button' to AEL does prevent the shutter release button first press from closing the aperture iris - UNLESS you are pressing and holding the AEL button. Then the aperture closes on first pressure as expected.

This is weird, but I can see an odd sort of logic behind it. Oddly unintuitive.

But to me the real frustration of using the button for AEL is that it is only effective WHILST the button is pressed. It is not a toggled lock that remains locked until reset by a second press. So you cannot use it for successive shots unless you continue to hold in the button. This is no good for me.

I find AEL very useful with other cameras, but I wear glasses and also have to use my left eye for the viewfinder, so holding in the button continuously is not really an option - my thumb ends up against the right lens of my glasses. Therefore AEL on the Q is useless for me. If it toggled I could use it.

There is some weird stuff in this firmware.

Tim

Thanks for the further info and indeed if this was intended it really makes little sense as I would only use AEL occasionally and would want to se DOF preview when not using the button. Anyway I have been in contact with Leica about it
