On camera Flash

I guess most S system users need/use remote controlled (portable) studio flashes with high output.

That being said, I use the SF 24d all the time on my S2-P. I find it very handy for a project I do, making close-ups of rusted metal objects with the 120mm CS. It gives me 1/500 - 1/1000 shutter speed which I need so as to avoid camera shake. Usually, I'm so close to the subject that the output of this small flash is enough for 5,6-8,0 @ 160-320 ISO if I set flash exposure compensation to +3.

I sometimes use on older Metz MZ-54i with the Leica adapter, which makes it fully integrated with the S system, just like the newer and bigger SF 58.

All these flash units are also very handy as on board fill flash for eye catch lights, even when used with larger studio flashes that light up the whole scene. They can also be used for a reportage technique called dragging the shutter, do a search!

A friendly forum member and good Leica S photographer named fotografz posts quite often about the use of flash, here and on reddot forum. Do a search, and you'll find a wealth of information.

Peter thanks for the info

I thought 1/500 was the max sync speed of the CS lenses?

I too have the Profoto B1heads was just thinking about having a more portable flash for the same as you use it

Neil, in the original info about the S2, back in 2008-2010 before the CS lenses were brought to market, it was said that the max sync speed with CS lenses would be 1/500 but during further development Leica engineers made the max sync speed of 1/1000 possible with CS lenses. There's in interesting article about the central/leaf shutter development in the second or third issue of S Magazine which you can download to your tablet for free here:

I use the older/cheaper SC-28 whereas the SC-29 in your picture has some additional function for Nikon cameras (I think it's something to do with the infrared AF assist light but I might be wrong). But it should work with the Leica S / SF58 as well even though the extra Nikon functionality probably would not apply here. Good thing is that you can chain (I think up to 3 of) these cables to get further away from the camera.

I also use a Leica SF 24D when I need a touch of light to open up the shadows. My old Nikon SB 28 also works. I've been meaning to get a SF 58 but haven't gotten around to it yet as on camera flash is not something I use very often.

Leica doesn't sell the SF 58 anymore apparently. Think they are gonna sell a Leica branded version of this one: http://www.metzflash.co.uk/pages/64_AF_digital.html possibly.

Definitely an exciting time for Leica. I would LOVE to see a version of this with a built in radio transceiver; possibly ProFoto's AIR system. At weddings, I currently use a Phottix on camera flash (for Nikon system) to trigger off camera flashes. The on camera flash provides a wonderful small kiss of light to fill in shadows while the off camera flashes do the heavy lifting. It may be an impossibility, but one can dream.
