Back-Button Focus

Can the thumb button be used as an af-on button? I am a big fan of using back-button focus and not knowing if I can do this is one of the things that kept me from buying first day. I have heard one person say it does, but the review don't mention it.

Thanks.

I use back button focus on my DSLR. For me it makes sense to separate metering from focusing.  But on my Q it is not possible to do the metering first (on an area that you want to have right exposure) and then, with the shutter half pressed, compose and focus. The back button focus must be set before you use the shutter button to measure, right?

I think the focus in most situations should be done as late as possible so you don't move the camera after focusing. I find that back button focus is not a very good option on the Q, also because the button is to small and you may need it for other options (such as 28/35/50 frame selection).

Leica Q arrived today and my back button focus doesn't seem to be working - tried all options in the menu 'Zoom/Lock-Button' set it to AEL and also AEL/AFL and no joy! the shutter button just doesn't seem to de-couple - Is mine defective or am I missing something? any help greatly appreciated

You can set the back button (thumb) to trigger various functions, among others exposure lock or focus lock.

So indeed you can choose to do the metering first (having set it to central point metering) : aim the zone you want to be correctly exposed, press thumb button (set to AE-L), then aim your subject, half-press the shutter to focus, then (possibly) finalize framing and go.

As already mentioned in this very forum IIRC, the best setup for this is

- Fn set to cycle between the 3 metering systems, allowing you to quickly jump to central point metering

- thumb button set to AE-L.

After this, if you don't need the above adjustments for the 'general picture', just point and shot, the shutter will still do both AE and AF...
