veritas_1 Posted June 13, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 13, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I had the chance to use the Leica Q for the past few days and will give my quick thoughts and share a few test shots which hopefully will help those thinking about picking one up decide. Note that I am not a professional photographer and use my cameras mostly for documenting travels and daily life for myself. What I like: Superb handling. If you come from an M system you will feel right at home, simple and feels just right. Especially the seamless transition from auto to manual is great, setting white balance, ISO, exposure lock, etc. is fast and seamless Lens quality is excellent and I noticed no strong difference in sharpness across shots, vignetting or similar Great build quality (a bit lighter than the M but very solid) Good implementation of macro mode (limited to f 2.8 and above) Display and EVF are very well implemented Is fun to use and has just the right size to take along in everyday life Super quiet and soft shutter Video quality very good and image stabilisation works well What I don't like The focal length seemed sometimes limiting to me personally for a travel camera (I normally shoot 90% with a 50mm lens) Some very few shots with chromatic aberrations and noticeable distortion (however minor and can be dealt with in post) Low-light performance not as good as the one of Sony A7 II I tested, however very close Stick-on lens cap is a bit hard to remove quickly No audio out for heavier video users Conclusion: I am very positively surprised by the Q and think that it is a big step for Leica. Where they really have paid attention is integrating manual and auto photography and keeping the usage very simple. Overall performance was great and I would happily use this - if the focal length was 50mm. I think if you already shoot most of your photos in 28mm and are considering it, get one, you will be happy. Alas, I will wait for the next M, if this Q is the basis for it that camera could be a real winner.
