biglouis Posted May 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't know if this has been asked here before but is there a database anywhere which lists the specifications of various Leica M lenses? For example, I'm contemplating a used Elmarit 90/2.8 and I'd like to find out things like closest focussing distance. I've wanted to know this for other lenses in the past. TIA if anyone has a link LouisB

dkCambridgeshire Posted May 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 19, 2007 The Leica Pocket Book 7th Edition has specs for all Leitz and Leica lenses from 1925 to 1992 including minimum focusing distances and MTF graphs and brief performance descriptions .. very useful book but in need of upgrading with data for recent new designs, Personally I have never found much use for 'minimum focusing distances' .. my main interest is in macro photography and I just wish that more data was made available/published ref magnifications possible with lenses eg 0.1 0.25, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 ... or 1/10, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 1:1 There are four Leitz/Leica 90/2.8 M lenses listed in the book ... which one are you contemplating buying? dunk
biglouis Posted May 19, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 19, 2007 There are four Leitz/Leica 90/2.8 M lenses listed in the book ... which one are you contemplating buying? dunk Dunk Thanks for the response. The one I am looking at is the 90/2.8 Elmarit, manufactured between 1989 and 2003. It appears to be quite a late serial number. Doh! Just remembered that I have on order a copy of the Erwin Puts lens book. I assume that it must have some more detailed specs in it but it is not due to arrive for another week or so. dkCambridgeshire Posted May 19, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 19, 2007 The lens is listed in E Puts' book and is also listed in Leica Pocket Book ... same optical cell is used for both M and R lens ... it is a superb lens ... minimum focusing distance is 100cm .. MTF graphs show high contrast and excellent definition right into the corners of the frame ... I have one myself ... I bought mine as a 'dented user' and had it serviced by Leica UK ... very pleased with it ... it is a 4 element lens with 4 separate elements so no danger of lens separation ... built in hood ... and takes 46mm filters ... vignetting is stated as 0.9 stops in the Pocket Book and half a stop in Puts' book but I have not noticed any vignetting with mine. Performance holds throughout the focusing range. MW Classic are listing a titanium version of this lens for not much more than other dealers charge for the normal black and chrome versions Dunk
guywalder Posted May 19, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 19, 2007 until the book arrives, Puts has a list on his website: Leica-M lenses also, unless I am mistaken, for current lenses the max magnification is on leica's own data sheets, pdf files downloadable from the leice site. Doesn't help for older lenses of course...
biglouis Posted May 19, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted May 19, 2007 I'm counting my chickens here but thanks for the advice. I'm glad to hear it is a sharp lens. I'm currently using a Rokkor 90/4 which is a lovely lens but I'd like the additional stop and the higher performance. Thanks again for all your help LouisB
