Leica Filter for X (113)

I have ordered a silver X and prefer Leica filters on my lenses.  Leica still offers a 43mm filter, the 43mmUV / IR.  Leica rep says the IR filter will affect exposure on the X and that it should be used on the M8 for which it was offered.  My dealer thinks the IR should work perfectly on the X and that the IR factor should be irrelevant.

Does anyone have experience with the 43 IR on the X ?

The UV/IR Filters were designed for the M8 series of cameras because their sensor (or the glass in front of it) does not filter IR enough. The M8 needs this filter to show accurate colours on all situations.

The filter has a distinct red hue and I would be surprised if this didn't have any impact. However, the camera's auto white balance will probably eliminate any colour cast for you. You will not have to cover for any exposure impact because the camera will do this for you automatically.

If I have some time today, I can mount a Leica UV/IR filter on the X Vario...

Ok, so I had a little time.

I have used a Leica UV/IR filter on the X Vario (Leica #13411, 46mm with black frame, mounted on the X with 43-46 adapter). I have shot the same scene with and without filter with WB set to indoor and set to auto. The subject is a white cotton towel. It filled about 70% of the frame.

As you can see, the filter does have a color cast. The second set shows that the color cast is eliminated by auto white balance.

A couple of things:

This was a really easy subject for the camera to figure out white balance (white towel). Depending on your scene, the camera will do a better or worse job. In other words: you will end up with some pictures showing a slight red color cast that you will need to correct yourself.

I was using JPEG for the example shots (needless to say)

43mm is a bit of an odd size for Leica and I was surprised that Leica actually makes a UV/IR for 43mm. When I bought the M8, there certainly was none and I would have needed one to use with the Zeiss Planar 50/2. I am actually scratching my head now - cannot think of any Leica M lenses with a 43mm thread except for the early Summilux 50.

Anyway, I would recommend using a Zeiss UV filter. Zeiss makes excellent filters with their T* coating and the UV version does is colorless. They have a 43mm version.

Thank you Bernie for so thoroughly checking this for me and for sharing the images which clearly reflect your conclusion.  I  has the 43 years ago with the 50 Summilux but sold it with the lens.  I really appreciate your efforts to investigate this.

I was leaning to getting the B & W  UV XS Pro, but your suggestion of the Zeiss UV  is a good one. Thanks again.
