pop Posted June 6, 2015 Share #21 Posted June 6, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are battery packs with variable voltages. If you can set it to 12V, you can attach it to the Leica charger without an external DC/DC converter.
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Hi pop, Take a look here Charging M batteries via large battery pack?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jmahto Posted June 9, 2015 Share #22 Posted June 9, 2015 When referring to the weight, it has a density similar to the M body, I don't believe it weighs the equivalent. it's smaller than 5 batteries, much less expensive (less than $100) and you are correct about multiple purposes and travel away from vehicles. I did a quick math. Sherpa 100 Power Pack: Capacity: 98Wh Weight: 2lb Equivalent Camera(M240) battery: can charge 7 camera batteries storing 13000mAh @ 7.4 volts - each camera battery is 1800mAh at 7.4 volts. Total weight 1.5 lb for 7 battery (0.2 lb per battery). Still multiple batteries weigh less than Sherpa 100 but it has multiple usage which is big plus. If I didn't have multiple usage then I would carry multiple camera battery instead to save weight while hiking.
thrid Posted June 9, 2015 Author Share #23 Posted June 9, 2015 Just curious. Why do you think a battery weighing almost as M, and charges M battery 5 times (maybe less in week since it looses charge) is better than not carrying 5 M battery in the first place? Is it because you have a need to charge some other device as well? I am assuming that you are away from a vehicle, which has a huge battery already for charging. - M240 batteries are $180-200 per unit. 10 x M240 batteries would cost as much as $2000 plus taxes. Depending on the brand a large capacity battery is $100-300. - In terms of logistics It's easier to charge a single battery, rather than multiple individual 240 batteries. - You can use the big battery to power or charge other items you may be using (GPS, image backup device etc) I'm thinking 3-4 x M240 batteries and the big block battery would be a good setup. pico Posted June 9, 2015 Share #24 Posted June 9, 2015 My toy truck has one 110V outlet and it does not charge any faster than the 12V outlet. Why should it?
jmahto Posted June 10, 2015 Share #25 Posted June 10, 2015 ..... I'm thinking 3-4 x M240 batteries and the big block battery would be a good setup. Maybe. But I am wondering when I will need so many batteries while away from car or any other power source. I do backpack a lot and I know that for more than 5-6 days in the wild, your days are constrained by the food you can carry. You have to come back to civilization to replenish your supplies anyway. Unless you are living off the land. For 5-6 days of backpacking and shooting in wild, I can very well do with 2-3 fully charged battery. Yes, 3 batteries cost a lot but M system is not cheap either. However, weights do matter. With M240+2lens+this large battery will be 6-7lb easily. That is too much for me in my otherwise 35-40lb backpack.
