Super compact and pretty good quality images for its time (sensor technology has raced ahead so the latest version will be better). I found the original X1 performed well at ISO1600. I usually peg the M9 at ISO800 or below. XV should also be good at higher ISOs. I haven't tried it, but have read that the XV also produces top notch B&W. Worth trying. Also, depending on your expectations, don't let the first few moments be the deciding factor how you feel about the camera. Keep and open mind & go out taking photos with it. Once you're doing that, you will realize how fantastic the camera can be. Personally, opening the box & taking few snappies at home I wasn't completely "sold". After my 1 week trip in Teneriffe with XV as my main camera.. Fantastic! It's hard to describe it really, but the camera works great & produces wonderful photos all the while being light to carry and doesn't get in your way. Sarcasm detected :-) On the same note better high iso, more accurate colors, better white balance, full frame sensor, builtin evf, longer and wider lens, aperture ring on the lens, slide out lens hood, lcd that doesn't reflect so much, lcd that doesn't wash put in sun, weather sealing, grip built-in, lower price, smaller, bigger, lighter, heavier.. Yep, list could be endless :-) But taking the camera as it is and using it, it does what it's meant to do. And does so quite elegantly without interfering with the process. williamgm Posted April 21, 2015 Share #26 Posted April 21, 2015 I put off the idea of an X Vario (to add to my wonderful Digilux 2) because of the lack of built-in viewfinder, something of a retrograde step after the Digilux. However, I tried a used camera in the local Leica dealer at Easter (with the EVF) and was sufficiently impressed to buy it (an additional 10% Easter discount helped the decision!). It is in virtually mint condition, and over the short period I've owned it the camera continues to impress, as does Leica service when I needed to re-register the camera and obtain a replacement manual. The EVF is not the greatest solution, and spoils the line of the camera (as well as being vulnerable to knocks etc) but it works. Reading the thinking behind the lens design in an interview with Peter Karbe also helped me reach a decision (along with various enthusiastic endorsements from members on this forum, including Don Morley). As most of those who've owned one for a while have said, it is a very under-rated camera, and may well turn out to follow the Digilux 2 and become a classic. I own the X Vario with its EVF and the X (type 113) with its (much better) EVF, and also have an M system (M Monochrom, M-E and M5). The X Vario is definitely good enough to be a color companion to the M Monochrom as was mine for over a year until I could afford an M-E. My M equipment is for when I really want to get out and enjoy the experience of photography. For regular (non-photography) travel however nothing beats the X Vario, though the X is much better in low light. The XV and X in fact pair so well that they are all I plan to bring on my upcoming trip to South Korea in June. Yes, image quality is better on the M Monochrom and perhaps on the M-E, but for what I do with travel images (11"X14" photo books) the difference is negligible, except for really shallow depth of field, which these cameras won't do at normal subject distances (X comes close).
