I notice it takes 1GB plus of memory and this increase as more pictures are previewed. Does anybody know how to manage this file size problem  Regards
Advertisement Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Hi woodda, Take a look here Lighroom huge memory draw. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hiphop Posted May 16, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted May 16, 2007 You might have numerous "backups". I believe you only need the "last" backup in the related file. I have noticed each time we make a backup there is an additional "backup file" being added. Being not an expert please check carefully and get other advices before touching anything in the LR filing system. Pierre-Olivier
jfgilbert Posted May 17, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted May 17, 2007 David, I'd love to help but do not understand your question. Are you talking about 1G of system memory (RAM) while Lightroom is running or is it 1G of disk space? If this is RAM, what OS do you use and how do you monitor the memory usage? carstenw Posted May 17, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted May 17, 2007 Lightroom generates the high-quality preview images on the fly, and keeps a cache which it flushes with time, probably LRU. All work done in Lightroom is done on these JPG preview images, and only at export time does the real processing actually happen. In the Preferences, there is a File Management tab where you can set the "Automatically Discard 1:1 Previews" drop-down to as little as 1 day. About the current memory usage The previous two settings can reduce the standard preview size and quality. I am not aware of any way to control the cache beyond that. woodda Posted May 17, 2007 Author Share #5  Posted May 17, 2007 Thanks does that mean that if I open 100 files and they are each 10mb each that woudl be 1Gb of previews   Regards
carstenw Posted May 17, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted May 17, 2007 Yes, it would seem so, although I imagine that some chunk of that would be in a disk cache, not in RAM. I would recommend not to open so many files all at once, if you can find another workflow which works for you. Then again, maybe it is simply time to buy another GB of RAM. Our files get bigger all the time, so I suppose it is reasonable to add memory as we go.

There are many folks with 3-4 GB of RAM getting occasional "Out of Memory" errors. In some cases, disabling the on-access virus scan for the LR data base file solves the issue, in other cases it does not. I am having problems after upgrading to 3 GB RAM, too.
