Yet more questions re the Leica T Strap

Was perusing the Leica Camera US web site today.

On the page discussing the Carrying Strap:

Carrying strap // Accessories for Leica T // Leica T // Photography - Leica Camera AG

I found two interesting statements. First:

Another highlight is the ideal balance of stretch and stability afforded by the mixture of silicones. The length can be adjusted to ensure that you can carry your Leica T safely and comfortably wherever you go.

Short of using a knife to shorten the strap and reinserting the pins into newly-drilled holes, is there any possibility that this is a correct statement?

and second:

Please note:

Leica Camera AG stands for the highest quality. We are therefore convinced of the long life and enduring value of our original products (including accessories). However, we hope you will understand that we cannot provide any guarantee for third-party products. Should you nevertheless decide to use third-party accessories (e.g. carrying straps for cameras and binoculars) with our original products, we must point out that there is a risk that our warranties may not be valid in case of damage to your Leica products.

Sounds like a clear warning to refrain from using the pins provided by third parties such as Match-Technical which allow use of third party straps.

Is there any reason to suspect that the Match-Technical pins are frail, or at least more frail than the Leica pins? These pins are sold by Leica Factory Stores in the US.

You can make a knot, which is the same for Artisan's silk strap...

I own the (expensive) MatchTechnical ones as well as the cheap eBay ones from China. The MatchTechnical are good and I use them every day. The eBay ones I trashed - you can tell they are cheap. The material is different, the shape of the lugs is different, the size of the hole and the finishing (i.e. Not polished as well)

If you use the forum search you will find my thread that explains in detail the tool and the procedure to use the original Leica strap pins with your own third party strap.

Thanks, Bernie for your answers.

I had already found your thread about the pin removal tool and have ordered one from Amazon. I'm sure I will use it to 'repurpose' the lugs off the Leica neckstrap.

Did not know about the cheap eBay lugs. Sounds like we should stay away from those. I own a set of Match Technical lugs, and they look to be well machined of good quality steel.

Which leather strap did you use (shown in the photograph in your thread)? Can't use just any leather strap since it needs to be no wider than 10mm at the attachment point, and there must be a max thickness which works also.

Thanks again.

Well, the width is indeed an issue. On the picture I am showing an Artisan 250 (with the ring) leather strap, which is not my favourite because it is too short (and I am also Asian...). It also barely fits the Leica straps (1mm) - when you take off the ring.

I found it easier to fit one of the straps that are made for Japanese cameras with the flat strap lug - the one that takes a band rather than a ring. Instead of the ring, these straps have a nylon band at the end.

In case of Artisan, these are the regular numbers: i.e. 25 instead of 25R.

If you get the Match Technical lugs you can use any strap with a ring with them.  I had an old leather strap for my old M8 leather case I bought from Luigi at http://www.leicatime.com and I have started using that - a lot better than the silicone stuff.

Regarding the adjustable silicone strap, I think the accessory silicone straps are adjustable and the default strap that comes with the camera is not.

Thanks, vikasmg, for your answers.  I have ordered a set or the MatchTechnical lugs and expect they will solve my problems.

One ADVANTAGE of the somewhat maligned lug system Leica has introduced for the T is that it is quick and easy to swap neckstraps, or go from a neckstrap to a wriststrap, - easier than any of the other systems I can think of.  I have broken more than one fingernail opening the split ring to change out the strap.  And in my shooting, I often like to go from neckstrap to wrist strap.  So an uncommented-upon advantage.

I presume that you are correct that the accessory strap, purchased separately, is of adjustable length. whereas the strap packed in with the camera is not.  The statement I quoted is in fact from the description of the accessory strap.
