Mornnb Posted March 15, 2015 Share #23 Posted March 15, 2015 It's quite a lot bigger, although all the reviews are pointing to it having better edge to edge sharpness, better bokeh than the Summilux. So you have a better performing and cheaper lens, at the price of a larger size. I wonder is it worth it?
CheshireCat Posted March 15, 2015 Share #24 Posted March 15, 2015 Thanks. And nice shots too ! Can you please compare it to the FLE ? (I mean rendering-wise, I don't care about the size and weight).
BerkMillers Posted March 15, 2015 Share #25 Posted March 15, 2015 So you have a better performing and cheaper lens, at the price of a larger size. I wonder is it worth it? A better performing lens to buy for 2k Euro instead of 4k Euro and only a little bit bigger.... No, it is absolutely not worth it

TheGodParticle/Hari Posted March 15, 2015 Author Share #36 Posted March 15, 2015 My impressions on the Zeiss Distagon ZM 35/1.4: 1. Beautiful build quality. Probably the best ZM lens i've handled so far, possibly because all my ZM lenses are black and this is the first silver/chrome ZM lens I handled. 2. No 6-bit coding grooves on the flange. I've been shooting with lens detection turned off but no funky colors on the edges. Or anywhere. 3. Well dampened Focus movement, the throw is short - which is to my taste. The lens does not extend/contract while focusing. 4. Aperture mechanism is also a pleasure to use. I am subconsciously in tune with Leica's 1/2 stop increments, the 1/3 stop increments screw with my brain. 5. Not front heavy on the M240, feels well balanced. Does not tip over when left on a table. Does tip over the M9/MM. The lens is clearly bigger and wider than the Leica 35Luxes but the weight difference isn't very pronounced. 6. VF blockage is more than with my 35Luxes but since i'm used to shooting with the Noctiluxes / 90 crons / 75Lux, this does not bother me. 7. Zeiss included a distinct bump on the focus wheel. Took a minute to get used to but now I like it, it lets me know where i am (distance) simply by feeling the bump. 8. Both the front and back elements are concave, like the 35LuxASPH v1 and v2 9. The length difference between the 35Luxes and the ZM35/1.4 is more pronounced without the hoods on the Leicas. With the hoods on the Leicas, the length difference seems trivial. The width/girth difference is also clear but i like the Zeiss Bump and the focus throw is short so the increased difference is not bad. 10. To my eyes, there is a slight difference in color between the chrome M240 body and the chrome ZM 35/1.4 lens. The M240 seems a few shades colder whereas the lens seems a few shades warmer. 11. High contrast, saturation, sharpness, neutral bokeh at short distances and the legendary T* coating needs no introduction. The first thing that came to my mind was how similar this lens performance appears to be to my favorite Leica APO50/f2. 12. The dreafully cheap Zeiss front cap hasn't changed. I'm sure Zeiss can allocate Cosina a few extra pennies to improve the quality. 13. I miss a leather carry pouch for the lens. I take good care of my equipment and I wouldn't want bits and pieces inside my bag scraping against each other. 14. The filter size is 49mm which is great news! My APO75/2 also has a 49mm filter size and 35-75 happens to be my fav combo so I can carry single set of filters and use on both the lenses. 15. The T* coating is simply incredible. Reduced flare, ghosting, improved contrast even shot contre-jour. This has tangible benefits in the form of better light transmission, thereby slightly faster shutter speeds. This is the first ZM lens made for Digital cameras but I have a feeling this lens will rock with Film too. I bought a few rolls of Delta400 and Portra400, waiting for an opportunity to get out and shoot. 16. No back/front focus issues or focus shift issues so far. 17. The famous Zeiss purple fringing problem is at a minimal (shot wide open against high contrast situations). 18. The lens is contrasty. It makes the files shot with the M240 look very similar to what we’re used to seeing from the M9. Rich colors and a nice pop. 19. The hood is in short supply currently but I did manage to buy one but haven’t felt the need to use it so far. 20. The plane of focus is pretty straight. Focus and recompose becomes a lot easier as does shooting planar subjects. I guess thats a decent summary of my experience so far. Is there a "conclusion"? Yes there is - As usual, Zeiss did not compromise on the size and bulk which is clear and the lens is a terrific performer indeed. For my purposes - The FLE will still be my go-to lens on the M240 (sharp, well saturated, high contrast images) - The ASPH will stay glued to my MM (medium contrast, medium sharpness and the best bokeh/rendering of the bunch in my eyes) - The ZM will probably find it's place on my M9. The T* coating really does make a tangible difference in light transmission and for me this means higher shutter speeds/Lower ISO which is a clear benefit. Should one rush out of the door to quickly sell the 35FLE to buy the ZM35? Totally depends on the subjects you photograph. +/- summary: - If you need a straight plane of focus - If you want to spend half the money - If you don't mind the size/girth difference - If you don't mind the lack of 6-bit coding out of the box (there are sufficient options in the market) - If 49mm filter size isn't alien to your kit or a hassle for you - Superior T* coating - 1/3 aperture adjustment which matches Exposure Compensation better than Leica's 1/2 - Bokeh is smoother than the FLE This lens will be your choice. Which of them is my favorite? The answer may surprise you. My top pick is the 35ASPH. I love the way it renders and I like the slightly colder tones. Sure its not the sharpest or the contrastiest but it's got a touch of Mandler in it and that agrees to my overall taste of lenses. I am waiting for the 35AA to come to it's new home, could this lens dethrone the 35ASPH as my fav 35/1.4?

rirakuma Posted March 15, 2015 Share #39 Posted March 15, 2015 Thanks for the comparisons Hari. My fav is the same as yours although that may change soon for you when you get the AA. Can't wait till you compare it with the holy grail
TheGodParticle/Hari Posted March 15, 2015 Author Share #40 Posted March 15, 2015 Thanks for the comparisons Hari. My fav is the same as yours although that may change soon for you when you get the AA. Can't wait till you compare it with the holy grail I'm happy you found it useful/interesting. I'm very excited to finally get a MINT in box sample of the 35 2A! From the images IWC Doppel and BerndReini posted, I'm loving the Noctilux look/rendering wide open and the punchy colors. The 35 2A appears to have a dose of the Leica glow with adequate sharpness which reminds me of the 28cron, which is another lens I love. Can't wait to get my hands on the lens and shoot a wide variety of subjects/conditions!
