M9 or M240 for B&W?

There's been a lot of chatter, which continues, about the colors from these cameras. Which is better, etc. I convert almost all of my files to B&W using Silver Efex and am wondering which camera people tend to prefer for black and white. I really like the M9 but am considering the M240 for some of the usability features--quiet shutter, longer battery life, potentially more reliable over the long term, etc.--and higher ISO capabilities. However, I shoot mostly between 160 and 640, as I would a film camera, so that last point is a nice to have, but not important for the work I typically do.

One big selling point for the M 240 for me is feeling more confident in rangefinder alignment/lens calibration when I'm out in the field, with liveview and the better LCD. I never reached that point with my M9--it was always a surprise to see what was and wasn't in focus when I viewed images on my computer. Whereas, I felt and still feel total confidence in my M7.

Anyhow, I'm curious to know which camera people prefer for B&W conversions. I tend to process for darker images, a little underexposed, with very black blacks.

I do almost the same as you in terms of B&W and had the same requirements and I have a black M-P 240 which fits the bill perfectly.

The only other I would consider is a replacement MM 240... but that has yet to appear and although there are guesses. no-one actually knows... it could be a bit of a wait.

Thanks for the reply and vote for the M. Did you previously use an M9?

If I wasn't financially restricted to owning one digital M, I would be very tempted by either a new or the old monochrome. Unfortunately, for the limited amount of work I do in color, it's not an option for me at the moment.

No...

I came to the M-P via:

Kodak Instamatic 50 (which I found on a park bench in Ireland in the '60's!)

Varius unremarkable and unmemorable cameras until...

Pentax Spotmatic F with 50mm 1.4 (fabulous camera and REALLY got me involved)

Nikon FM

Nikon F2A (my favourite of all up until my M)

Olympus OM-1 Black (lovely little camera)

Nikon 801

Various compact film cameras including a baby Leica which I still have somewhere).

Leica Digilux (which is still in my fishing creel for those days of cane rods and wicker)

Nikon D100

Nikon D200

iPhone (! kid you not!!!)

Leica M-P

I spent a lot of time researching my next camera... over a year and went from Nikon digital (more of the same and discounted it after a while), Fuji X Pro 1, then decided to be the third generation of my family to have a Leica and looked at used M8 to used M9 and VERY nearly bought an immaculate M9P from Leica Manchester that had hardly been used... and then went into Leica Mayfair with my wife one day and she loved the whole experience and said why don't you just buy a new one? You'll only do it once (hehe!!!)and you may as well buy into the whole thing...

Took bit of getting used to to be honest.... but it now feels more like my days with my Spotmatic F or F2A

In other words... I'm back to enjoying taking photo's and not being so disconnected with what I was trying to achieve.

Takes a while though...;)

It's a trade-off: The 240 lets you use the LR/PS color sliders when making BW conversions, and you can't do this with the MM. But the MM has better dynamic range and shadow detail, not to mention higher ISOs.

If you really want to shoot only BW, go for the MM? If some color too, the M240?

And of course there's the 'alien' option: The Sony a7R's 36MP color files, converted to BW, offer resolution that's right up there with MM, you have live view as with 240, and you can use the sliders too. I don't use Sony bcz of shutter vibration. But if/when Sony fixes this and comes out with an even higher resolution sensor, I'll be testing my MM against Sony again, to see which best suits my taste.
