M8 images lost- need expert help

Although I'm a longtime M user I'm new to digital. As such, I'm reasonably ignorant about digital issues and here is my problem:

I have mysteriously lost at least 8 important images from a 2G Ridata Supreme Series SD card. Most of the images on the card were JPEG; however, a number were shot in both DNG and JPEG fine. I filled the card up yesterday. Today I was reviewing the images in the camera (using the M8 LCD) and could not find the missing images- including the last three shots (all shot in DNG + JPEG) on the card. The camera still says the card is full even though I know it had more images on it yesterday (and no additional shots were taken) so I know they were not accidently deleted. I tried the card in my second M8 body and could still not find the missing images and the second M8 also said the card is full. I also then tried downloading the images onto my computer and could still not find the missing ones.

1) Any advise- explanation from the experts on the forum?

2) Is the card corrupt in part and should I ask that my shop replace it ?

3) This was an original (Nov 7 2006) M8 and has both been back to Solms and had the latest firmware installed. Is the problem with the camera rather than the card ?

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,

Directory structures get damaged on storage devices in a variety of ways and that can result in lost data. Hence the existence of "image rescue" software. There's a good discussion in http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/19946-photorescue-v-3-a.html?highlight=image+rescue of the use one such tool.

good luck,

Joel,

Thanks much. I was able to recover the lost images using PhotoRescue which I purchased online. I still wonder what happened to the card- I guess its my welcome to the digital photography world.

Douglas a good rule to follow each and every time is format the card before you shoot again. What i do is after a shoot download the card via a SD card reader and put on desktop than from there back up all the files to a external and once you know there okay . Than put card back in camera and reformat the card before i even step out of my office to go out again. really to be honest make a process that works for you than be religious about and never vary your process. i have been doing digital a long time and the key is take any variable out of the process ,follow exactly the same method. Trust me you are not unique here and it has happened to hundreds of folks and they try all kinds of downloading from camera and all this weird stuff . Really the best thing you can do after your last shot is get the card out of the camera and download it as soon as you can. i do all kinds of things in the 4 SD card holder all shot cards get turned upside down so when i get back in my office i know exactly which ones were shot and which ones were not. Even after i do a job the last shot i take the card out of the camera and put in holder immediately so i never second guess myself. Seriously get a routine and stick with it , that is the best advice i can give anyone.
