It is a few years since I used an ipad, but I found it an utter pain to use as you describe. That was the reason I switched to a Surface Pro 3, though I tried my wife's Macbook Air along the way - it would have been a slightly larger alternative.

You can download to the ipad by cable, probably direct from the M9. I only had the M240, which has no USB port, so I had to use Apple's own expensive SD card reader and cable. I didn't find the speed too slow, though other's do.

At the time the only option for raw imports was Photoraw, and Snapseed was the best option for processing. There are a few better options now, but still only LR Mobile - not the full version.

The killer is how to get images off the ipad. I could find no way to transfer them to an SD card. The only option was by wifi to the cloud, which took an age.

You have to remember that the ipad is not a general purpose computer; it is a browsing tool with some apps designed for its own ecosystem. You'd be far better off getting a real computer with all the connectivity, file management tools and full applications you'd expect, like a MacBook Air, or Surface Pro.

Thanks a lot for the answer.

Kind of confirms how I feel in general for the iPad: a great potential hindered by frustrating limitations (often software related). I always love to be proven wrong on this. Seems not this time, given your comment on getting the pictures out of the iPad being a major pain. Too bad, the iPad can really be great (and not only as a content consumption device).

Regarding to the laptop: I did not mean I would like not to carry a laptop at all, I just meant I would like the iPad to do a decent job as a backup to the laptop, in case the laptop fails.
