I came upon a little windfall of SLR gear today--my girlfriend is bringing back a Contax G1 and S2 with 85/1.2, 45/2, 15mm/3.5 and a 90/2.8 from Japan. Just some stuff she found laying around the house. Does anyone know if I there is an adapter for either of these bodies to M mount, or whether it's even worth bringing them back?

G1 - not an SLR, but also not compatible with M lenses

45 and 90 lenses - these are for the G1. Technically, they can have Leica M mounts machined into them. But there is no way to focus them, since they are AF only (no focusing ring on the lens). With a huge amount of effort and expense, no doubt the glass could be fitted into focusing mounts somehow, but likely the cost would be more than just buying equivalent NEW Leica lenses - and certainly more than used Leica of the same specs.

The S2 ia an all-mechanical SLR in the Kyocera/Zeiss/Contax range. Won't accept M lenses except for macro work (that big box for the SLR mirror/finder is deeper than an M camera).

The SLR lenses (85 f/1.2 and 15mm) probably can be adapted to fit an M. They won't link to the rangefinder, so using the 85 at anything other than infinity would be guesswork, even with a good adapter (Adapters: SLR Coupled to M sells them). Zero DOF with a lens that long and that fast.

The 15mm has so much DOF that it might work very well adapted to a Leica M mount. Just estimate the distance and set it on the focusing ring, as with the Cosina Voigtlander 15mm. A very big lens, though, since it designed to clear an SLR mirror.

If nothing else, the 85 lens is likely worth big bucks, even if all you do is sell it. It was made as a sporadic commemorative lens and thus is rare (as well as being an exceptional optic). Ebay has one right now (converted to Canon EOS) for north of $3,000

The 15mm is also fairly valuable - same optics that Leica bought from Zeiss for their previous 15mm SLR lens.

The 85/1.2 MM type alone is worth 4-5k if I were you I'd put it on eBay ... others for G mount need major surgery for use on the M ... but, the best surgeon is in Japan.

MS Optical

Hmmm, well it should be fun to shoot some film again anyway. I love getting hand-me-downs... :D

If the 85 is really the 1.2 rather than that more common and more pedestrian 1.4, then unless you need the money, I would hang on to it and get a camera you can use it on. Perhaps a 5D and a focus-confirmation adapter. This is meant to be one of the best portrait lenses ever made.

It really is the 85/1.2 -- I just had her look again. Oh no, this is going to make me buy a Canon, I can already tell.
